Farmer unhappy over arrest uses tractor to smash 7 sheriff's vehicles

A farmer who was arrested last month expressed his displeasure Thursday afternoon in Newport by driving a heavy tractor over seven police vehicles owned by the Orleans County Sheriff’s Department, authorities said.

Roger Pion, 34, has been taken into custody, according to the Sheriff’s Department and Newport City Police.

“It’s more than half our fleet. We have 11 cars,” Chief Deputy Sheriff Phil Brooks told the Burlington Free Press.

“It’s pretty much the biggest tractor you can get,” Police Chief Seth DiSanto said.

“It was a massive tractor. It has four six-foot tandem wheels on the back. It was red. It must be at least a 15-ton tractor,” said Newport Express Publisher Ken Wells, who was at the scene.

Brooks said five of the damaged vehicles were marked cruisers, and two were unmarked, including a transport van. He said an eighth car, belonging to the department bookkeeper, was pushed out of the way in an effort to get at the cruisers. It had minor damage.

The incident happened early Thursday afternoon on the Derby Road near the new office for the Orleans County Sheriff’s Department. The department had moved from downtown into the former Passumpsic Savings Bank last year.

Brooks said he ran to a nearby service station where the department had a cruiser being worked on and jumped in to pursue the tractor, but soon learned that Newport City Police had the vehicle stopped about two miles down the road.

Brooks said Pion was turned over to the Vermont State Police, which will conduct an independent investigation.

Newport police arrested Pion on July 3 on charges of resisting arrest and possession of marijuana, DiSanto said. Pion was due in court next Tuesday.

The U.S. Border Patrol also was assisting at the scene.

A news conference in planned for 3 p.m. at the sheriff’s office.

Never been arrested, but I've considered making a complaint to the police for harassment after being stopped and searched 3 times in a few months.

At the end of the day, the world would be pretty Fuzzy Bunny place without the police, so I accept it as a necessity.

Nah. I mean, I harbour extremely violent revenge fantasies against the police, prisons, and the legal system in general on a near-daily basis, but I don't act on them... Mostly because I'm aware that if there's a problem with that kind of infrastructure, government, etc. It is, quite simply, the fault of the common public. If people can't build a society where they actually don't prefer to have corrupt police over no police at all out of sheer paranoia and an inability to actually resolve the root causes of crime instead of taking a draconian reactionary stance, then they're lazy and irresponsible; politics be damned.

Of course, that's asking far, far too much of the dehumanising culture of distorted individualism we call Western Society...

Rants that absolutely nobody on Earth gives a Fuzzy Bunny about aside, this episode with the tractor is nothing:

Have never been arrested, have been under a caution for something that was not actually my fault.

Cannot fault the Police around here. Have regularly broken the Speed limits to a massive degree, and when I have been caught (twice) doing so, they have let me off - when they could take my license away from me.

I must add I only break speed limits at night time when I am not a danger to other road users :)

Cool story, bro.

Dude had weed. Weed is, whether we like it or not, illegal. He likely would have gotten some fines and maybe probation had he not behaved like a . Though it is funny, to some degree.

I've had my share of run-ins with the police, and the truth is, they're just people. Some are dumb, some have ego problems, and some are great people who are actually trying to do their job to the best of their ability.

The worst run in I've had with the police was once when my mom called them on me claiming I had a knife (which I didn't) and was threatening her (which I wasn't). She's far from mentally healthy, and was out of various medications. Cops came in and detained me, which made sense, but even after the reality of the situation was apparent, I was lectured for upwards of forty minutes, while in cuffs, about how I shouldn't take advantage of my mom in that state and how people like that made the officer sick, and how if he found out that I was lying I'd be in big trouble.

Other times, I've been speeding or had a headlight out and gotten off. Cops are people, and some are far from fit to do the job they're assigned. And there's nothing any of us can do about it. :?:

I've never had a run-in with a cop but have actually come close to, and for a stupid reason.

Anyways I laughed way too much at this article.
