I... don't know that I approve of this.

Well that is interesting. Since the portion of the brain that control conciousness is removed, they must feel as though they are killed, and as the article puts forth the operation is painless, so that's humane I guess, just killing them now as opposed to later. Their bodies being maintained afterwards is creepy as hell though, but although this is a seriously gray zone, I guess would approve of it.

But on a more practical matter, wouldn't the lack of movement lead to improper muscle development? That would make for poor meat I imagine.

Before anyone goes off the deep end, it needs to pointed out that the project in question is a model; nobody has actually attempted this yet.

Anyway, the ethical issues may seem obvious, but ultimately it just comes down to people's visceral reaction to a clinically dead chicken being grown for meat. This is really just a different scale of projects where meat is grown in a petri dish.

Regardless, it's doubtful that something like this could be implemented, as it'd be nigh-unworkable in practice, due to the entirely inevitable physical development problems that Penguinguy already pointed out. "Poor" doesn't begin to describe the quality of meat that would come from this, and any means to compensate for it would assuredly make the entire process horribly inefficient and expensive.

On the other hand, this would mean that you're technically eating a vegetable when you have chicken...

What is there to disapprove of? This is much better for the chickens, as well as likely significantly reducing the cost of food for many people. I think it's a fantastic idea.

Hopefully they will one day be able to produce animals brain dead from the dead so no suffering happens whatsoever.

This reminds me of what Douglas Adams came up with in "the restaurant at the end of the universe". The idea of animals that wanted to be eaten, it's a step in that direction.
