I was wondering if anyone knew anything about this, seeing as I got a Sodastream carbonator (aka the lazy way out) for Christmas. I'm planning on making ginger ale and root beer(s) mostly. The ginger ale will hopefully turn out similarl to the one by Americana, and the root beer I'm debating on ingredients (I can get sassafrass, but it's outlawed by the FDA as a carcinogen).

You don't have to use the ingredients that comes with that, you can make your own? I guess I didn't know that. I know when I worked at Sonic, people always would get root beer with a shot of vanilla. Maybe you could add some vanilla extract to your root beer for added creaminess.

...none of the recipes called for vanilla when I looked them up. That's actually something that didn't occur to me to add. Best part is, I don't have to special order it. Thanks dude.

Those sodastreams are fun. We used to have one in the 80's. It's not the cheapest way to make soda, but you get a lot more freedom to choose what you put in it which is what makes it nice.

The more authentic and interesting flavors you make from it, the more it'll 'pay off' having.

I remember making root beer for a science class back in high school... it was so much fun! I am sure you will have a great time making homemade soda with your Sodastream carbonator. :)

I can ship the syrup, but you guys are on your own for seltzer. That's the problem with this thing: I'm assured that it is physically impossible for it to carbonate other substances, under pain of death and voided warranty... I'm sure it's just the company being obnoxious, but the syrups probably keep better anyway.

Anyway, I made some ginger ale a few days ago. Used a bit too much honey and it wound up smelling like piss. I liked it though, and my friends brave enough to try it went back for seconds. I'll probably spend tomorrow working on the recipe, which I will gladly post when I have it done. The syrup can just be added to carbonated water, like club soda.

Spent tonight working on my recipe. Good news: Cutting back on the honey did, in fact, get rid of the urine smell. It actually tastes like Canada Dry. I was going for something a bit spicier though, so I'm going to experiment with adding more ginger later in the boiling.

Another thing you might want to try, my best friend always gets chocolate syrup in his Dr. Pepper. Just thought I would let you know. Also, my English teacher in High School always talked about adding a tablespoon of chocolate syrup to his Coke.

That's... a bit out there for me... Also, I don't plan on making cola or decyphering the Dr Pepper recipe, but I may experiment with chocolate in other sodas like root beer.

Anyway I may as well post the recipe for my last batch of ginger ale. This is a syrup, so you can mix it with any club soda (or, God forbid, tonic water) that you want. It's not as spicey as my first batch, but it also doesn't smell like a urinal. I've gotten a few liters out of it so far, and there's still half the container left of syrup. At around 5 bucks for the investment (most of which is the squeeze ginger) it's pretty cost effective.

Quote:
Ingredients:
4 oz Squeeze Ginger
4 cups water
4 cups sugar
4 Tablespoons clover honey
4 limes (zest and juice)
Dash of sea salt
Dash of cayenne (when no one is looking)

Boil all of the ingredients (except the limes) in a sauce pan on high. The goal is to reduce it all into a syrup; it'll finish at around 1.5 to 2 cups of golden liquid. Add the limes, half at a time, throughout the the boil. You should be adding the last of the juice to the syrup when you're removing it from the heat. Pour it through a strainer to get the sludge out of it. I suspect that crap can be used to make candy, but this will require more research (and possibly another thread).

About four spoonfuls is enough for a small glass of soda. Pour it in the glass first, without ice, and then add the soda. You can add ice afterward.

Ginger ale recipe: Perfected.

Moving onto black cherry vanilla, starting tomorrow. And Tanks, I think I will take your advice and add a bit of chocolate to it. I'm going to be using actual vanilla bean though, so in keeping with my Fuzzy Bunny retentiveness, I'll probably spend the day searching for cocoa beans/nibs.

Dear diary, I've discovered a few rules for making your own soda syrups.

1) Just because it tastes good and smells good as a syrup doesn't mean it's good carbonated
2) Lime makes everything taste better
3) Use extra ginger
4) 2 cups water, 2 cups sugar(s)
5) Buy extra tupperware
6) Make candy
7) Real cherries impart a distinct powdered sugar flavor, regardless of a lack of powdered sugar in the batch. Use good ones in season, then add liquor and/or half and half
8) Vanilla bean always tastes better the second time you use it
9) Making lists is hard
10) Root beer costs your first born and three goats in ingredients. Don't make it unless sarsaparilla grows wild in your backyard.

I would like to issue a public apology to one "Tanks and Guns": Turns out the chocolate cherry tastes pretty good if you use it in Italian sodas and add extra cream. Kinda tastes like chocolate milk.

Apology accepted. I wonder how that would taste with some Bailey's or Kahlua added to it? If you're old enough, of course.
