Well just some days away, the US Senate is going to enforce censorship on the internet where we will lose freedom of sharing of information, lets help stop them from doing it, and only those from the United States are able to, since I'm from Asia, I'm not able to do much, but majority of you Villagers are from United States, help take action now @ http://www.mozilla.org/sopa/

How do you expect this Village to take action on anything at all?

SOPA/PIPA not passing is just the first step. It's very likely and possible that some parts, or all, will be added to another bill. Lobbyists and entertainment industries won't go down very easily.

I think they'll find that the online grassroots community is stronger, though. A bill of this sort could cripple the online infrastructure of America (probably taking half the developed world with it). I think the answer to piracy is more companies or services like Netflix, Hulu, and Crunchyroll, to name but a few. Take away the market for piracy.

Is it weird that I consider the possibility of a physical uprising/civil war as a realistic result of internet censorship in the US?

I mean the internet is a pretty big thing now. Pretty much everyone has it on their PHONES these days. It's integrated into our daily lifestyles to a nearly absurd degree. If the government had successfully moved towards a censorship of the web a decade ago, it might have been begrudgingly accepted. But these days? That's a straight up infringement of freedom upon a really popular aspect of the average American's life. I can't help but feel that there would be blood.

And I'd be totally cool with that.

I completely agree. However, the online grassroots aren't capable of paying the government tens of millions of dollars to get our way.

This is an endurance test for both sides.

Even Wikipedia shuts down its website yesterday for 24 hours, I can't bring myself to imagine if they shuts down for good, millions of people depend on Wikipedia for research, school projects and we simply can't do without them

Megaupload hasn't been "taken down"; it's just been made unavailable pending a frivolous investigation that'll die down once foreign countries stop using the governmental power within in their jurisdictions to suck up to america's lobbyists.

That being said, taking down a filesharing site to curb piracy is about as logical and effective as making DVD burners illegal for the same purpose.

From what I understand about the American textbook industry (read: monopolists), there'll be a lot of corporate interest because of that.

You got that right. This is only the start of the war and the SOPA supporters have made the first move.

Luckily we have Anonymous to retaliate for us, otherwise we wouldn't be able to respond in turn to websites being taken down.

Gateux - maybe they'll finally use a journal or an alternate source that actually makes them think.

Freeascar - when you go beyond the stupid grandstanding of Anonymous, you might realise that the police had been investigating Megaupload for two years and the warrants were served two weeks ago. As for 'Retaliating' by taking websites down, their actions are about equivilant to tearing down a poster. The government websites they take down are generic information provided to the public and are of no importance.

Yeah I read about the whole investigation, actually thought it was even shorter than that. After I posted I also checked out some of the websites Anonymous had taken down and they're back up, so you have a point with the poster comparison.

Needless to say the only thing that's actually going to stop SOPA is good campaigning, petitioning and lobbying. Can't rely on terrorist organizations for that.
