With spring on the way I've been hearing a lot of birds chirping away in the morning (and all day really), and it got me to thinking, I really enjoy birds. Maybe it comes from when I was little and I used to stare at the bird feeders hanging in our trees outside the window and watch them try valiantly to extract the seeds from the plastic container, or maybe it just comes from the innate majesty associated with birds, but I thought it would be neat to have a thread dedicated to them. So here's to you my avian friends!



One time a ruby-throated hummingbird was trying to feed on the sugar-water feeder and accidentally flew straight into the big window in my living room. At the time I was reading a book on a couch (probably Harry Potter or something) and it startled the bajeesus out of me. The bird died instantly and we plucked its beautiful throat feathers to save for some strange reason. They were very pretty feathers. I'll see if I can't get a photo of them.

Birds are incredible beings! You know they're essentially dinosaurs, right? They're as close as we'll ever get. I find this kind of heartbreaking.

Do you really think that dinosaurs could have possibly been feathered? Well, we actually know that some of them were. The feathered dinosaurs are actually the ones whose color we can most accurately guess.

Within the fossilized feather cores, the pigment remains intact. We can extract this, and figure out the dinosaurs feather colors, and be able to finally know what color they were!

Did you also know, that birds are very lazy? Some of them will run up trees and jump off of them, because that takes less energy than lifting off from the ground!

Well here is a very large picture of a ruby-throated hummingbird, albeit not the one that ran into our window. And I did hear that about dinosaurs. The whole idea of feathered velociraptors is extremely disconcerting.

Mockingbirds have such vibrant plumage.

Penguin is best bird.They will actually waddle right up to humans, as penguins have no natural land predators and no instinctual fear of land animals.
