This is a camp patch from 1949 that sold for over $300 ... what makes it interesting however, is that it's from a black scout camp back when the scouts were segregated.

This is Camp J.K. Orr from the Atlanta Area Council... that's where black troops went, and white ones went to Camp Bert Adams. This patch is the same patch as the 1949 Bert Adams patch, but with the different name on it.

I'm from Atlanta, and J.K. Orr was not closed untill around 1960 when black troops started to go to Bert Adams.

What may interest Blackmage here, is that Camp J.K.Orr was renamed Camp Alatoona and became the council's aquatic camp-- where Black went for aquatic school... and is still in use today.

While i had seen a few J.K. Orr patches as a kid, this is the *only* one i've ever seen for sale or trade, *anywhere*....

Hello,

I want to make a correction here. Camp J.K. Orr was not closed in the 1960's as I have many memories of going to this campground well into the late 1970's. Also, it was not a blacks only campground - at least from my time spent there. I believe it was eventually converted into a retention pond and wildlife wetlands area in the late 1990s.
