Runevillage the forum is pretty well much done. Runevillage the group will eventually die, but as long as we're still friends with each other in the end, it's still a pretty big thought in our heads. Runevillage the family is forever, no matter where we settle down. If absolutely nothing else ever comes of Runevillage in the future, that alone is a pretty damn awesome thought.

It's not the interface i care about, it's the apps. Give me Office for Linux, a half decent library of games and out-of-the-box stability, and i'll switch.

And don't say "Wine", i have that on Mac OS X already

AGreed, Office has no real replacement, Libreoffice is great sometimes but its no alternative to MS office. Steam are working on the games, But out of the box stability ? Most Linux distros offer this, The more "stable" are the likes of debian

Ok, i'll give you that. It is pretty stable. But i've had, personally, uncountable issues with Linux. when you want an OS that works, it's quite easy to become unenthused after X decides to go on holiday and GRUB loses track of where the kernel is.

Agreed - i used to hate X breaking all the time. and seemingly simple things like multi monitor set ups becoming huge tasks of editing config files.

But now i cant remeber the last time i had to change anything to do with X with a command line, and Wayland looks pretty stable right now and works pretty well as a replacement. I learnt alot about linux because of X breaking and being force to use the command line, But i agree its not a good user experience. Debain 7 + XFCE has been running for me since the release with no issues that have needed any command line fixing.

With Grub, Ive also never had an issue at all ? Maybe something wasnt triggering ?

And lastly - its kinda sad that this thread has more talk in that TE has had all year :(

Dunno, I've never really had much luck with Linux... I'll probaby fire up my Mint box over christmas and tinker with that. I also have a Raspberry Pi sat on a desk collecting dust :s Should really get an SD card and fire it up...

TBH TE needs to be taken behind the barn and put out of it's misery. IMHO all the subforums need to be shot...

RPi uses Wayland.

To be fair it never actually used to be X that crashed, It was the buggy graphics drivers. Since Steam have made a move to linux the quality of the drivers has hugely increased

This is my first time visiting in a long time, but I considered myself to be one of the tech elites when I was an active 16 year-old here! Looking back I wouldn't say I was super computer-savvy, but I did like to tinker quite a bit, and the hobby paid off in the form of inspiring me to study computer science in college!

I programmed my way through college with vim on a Fedora 16 installation on my Dell laptop. I used to use Windows a lot before college but I learned programming on Unix-like systems (read: Linux) and haven't really looked back. Incidentally, I used to be a Mac hater but I liked them much much more once I learned that they were relatively Unix-like themselves.

Now I work at a tech company and get to solve hard problems and create new things every day, and I love it. Passion is a really great thing. :)

We really did, haha. I've always been surprised at how many RVers went into CS.

I'm likely going to start a B.CS or a B.IT this year as well.
