This was announced this morning:

Quote:
Asteroid mining plans revealed by Planetary Resources, Inc.

Expanding the resource base of humanity to include the solar system

Seattle, Wash. – April 24, 2012 — Planetary Resources, Inc. announced today its plan to mine Near-Earth Asteroids (NEAs) for raw materials, ranging from water to precious metals. Through the development of cost-effective exploration technologies, the company is poised to initiate prospecting missions targeting resource-rich asteroids that are easily accessible.

Resource extraction from asteroids will deliver multiple benefits to humanity and grow to be valued at tens of billions of dollars annually. The effort will tap into the high concentration of precious metals found on asteroids and provide a sustainable supply to the ever-growing population on Earth.

A single 500-meter platinum-rich asteroid contains the equivalent of all the Platinum Group Metals mined in history. “Many of the scarce metals and minerals on Earth are in near-infinite quantities in space. As access to these materials increases, not only will the cost of everything from microelectronics to energy storage be reduced, but new applications for these abundant elements will result in important and novel applications,” said Peter H. Diamandis, M.D., Co-Founder and Co-Chairman, Planetary Resources, Inc.

Additionally, water-rich NEAs will serve as “stepping stones” for deep space exploration, providing space-sourced fuel and water to orbiting depots. Accessing water resources in space will revolutionize exploration and make space travel dramatically more economical.

“Water is perhaps the most valuable resource in space. Accessing a water-rich asteroid will greatly enable the large-scale exploration of the solar system. In addition to supporting life, water will also be separated into oxygen and hydrogen for breathable air and rocket propellant,” said Eric Anderson, Co-Founder and Co-Chairman, Planetary Resources, Inc.

Of the approximately 9,000 known NEAs, there are more than 1,500 that are energetically as easy to reach as the Moon. The capability to characterize NEAs is on the critical path for Planetary Resources. To that end, the company has developed the first line in its family of deep-space prospecting spacecraft, the Arkyd-100 Series. The spacecraft will be used in low-Earth orbit and ultimately help prioritize the first several NEA targets for the company’s follow-on Arkyd-300 Series NEA swarm expeditions. Chris Lewicki, President and Chief Engineer, said “Our mission is not only to expand the world’s resource base, but we want to increase people’s access to, and understanding of, our planet and solar system by developing capable and cost-efficient systems.”

“The promise of Planetary Resources is to apply commercial innovation to space exploration. They are developing cost-effective, production-line spacecraft that will visit near-Earth asteroids in rapid succession, increasing our scientific knowledge of these bodies and enabling the economic development of the resources they contain,” said Tom Jones, Ph.D., veteran NASA astronaut, planetary scientist and Planetary Resources, Inc. advisor.

Planetary Resources, Inc. is financed by industry-launching visionaries, including Google CEO Larry Page and Ross Perot, Jr., Chairman of Hillwood and The Perot Group, who are committed to expanding the world’s resource base so that humanity can continue to grow and prosper:

Eric E. Schmidt, Ph.D., Executive Chairman of Google, Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) and Planetary Resources, Inc. investor: “The pursuit of resources drove the discovery of America and opened the West. The same drivers still hold true for opening the space frontier. Expanding the resource base for humanity is important for our future.”
K. Ram Shriram, Founder of Sherpalo, Google Board of Directors founding member and Planetary Resources, Inc. investor: “I see the same potential in Planetary Resources as I did in the early days of Google.”
Charles Simonyi, Ph.D., Chairman of Intentional Software Corporation and Planetary Resources, Inc. investor: “The commercialization of space began with communications satellites and is developing for human spaceflight. The next logical step is to begin the innovative development of resources from space. I’m proud to be part of this effort.”
Some of the company’s advisors include film maker and explorer James Cameron; General T. Michael Moseley (Ret.); Sara Seager, Ph.D.; Mark Sykes, Ph.D.; and David Vaskevitch.

Founded in 2009 by Eric Anderson and Peter H. Diamandis, M.D., Planetary Resources, Inc. is establishing a new paradigm for resource utilization that will bring the solar system within humanity’s economic sphere of influence by enabling low-cost robotic exploration and eventual commercial development of asteroids. For more information, please visit http://www.PlanetaryResources.com.

My co-worker (who is heavily into this) says the group plans to have their first spacecraft in operation and mining in the next two years. Apparently we're at the point where this is possible?

Check out their Team page, too. They have a lot of really rich, well-known people backing them. This seems like it's going to go places.

There's water on asteroids???

I was under the impression that water was kind of a rare thing.

In its liquid form, yes. Ice however isn't necessarily uncommon.

It's been pointed out by Stephen Hawking (and probably a few other geniuses on youtube) that a few moons and asteroids were already considered as places with potential for human life due to ice deposits that could be turned into water and energy. I guess the discovery of / idea of farming it off asteroids finally became within our reach.

This is either going to be the best thing that happened to humankind, the worst thing to happen to the already questionable balance of power and wealth between the countries, or just a total failure. Naturally, I'm hoping for the best but not expecting it.

I knew ice was a thing, I guess I'm just more confused on the viability of harvesting/converting it to usable water. Since water in its liquid form obviously doesn't/wouldn't exist naturally on those NEAs, it would probably take a lot of work to set up some artificial means of not only converting and maintaining that ice to liquid, but applying it in use for energy (in large enough quantities to be worthwhile).

I'm curious if this mining will be done purely by machine? That strikes me as unimaginably complicated, but it seems even more unlikely that human workers could be sent to these NEAs for extended periods of time, much less be able to accomplish a large demand of manual labor (considering restrictions on resources such as oxygen).

It's all obviously going to happen eventually, but I can't imagine anything more than the first few steps being taken within our lifetimes. The article makes it sounds like it'll all be going down flawlessly within a matter of years, and I'm just not buying it. There's too much prep work to be done.

Then again I don't know Fuzzy Bunny about any of this and probably sound like an idiot, which I am. :awesome:

I saw an article about this suggested to me by Google news. I'm very intrigued, to say the least.

I heard on a news show that one of their plans down the line consists of bringing asteroids that are orbiting the sun closer to earth so that they can be mined more effectively, which I assume opens up the possibility of manned mining equipment being sent to one. So this could also become a "first man to walk on an asteroid" thing too.

Hasn't anyone from planetary resources seen final fantasy the spirits within. Scary things live on asteroids.

I do find this asteroid thing far fetched. NASA lost funding to go to the moon, but these guys can just zip on up there and mine away.

Another thing I'm curious to see played out, is how the governments will get their share?
Here, the government owns the mineral rights. They get paid for every single mine or well that is extracting the governments underground resources. They are going to do whatever it takes to keep collecting their billion dollar paycheck. Will they create an interplanetary tax? That people will have to pay when purchasing goods from space? Will they charge this company when the ship leaves international areas and enters into their country?

I was told it would most likely be done by a swarm of tiny machines, if nothing else than for the fact that asteroids have a very weak gravitational pull, so you need something small but effective.

My friend was sharing this article the other day on Facebook. It kind of sounds like something out of a Sci-Fi movie, or novel. I also wonder how exactly the mining will be done. I am guessing they are going to be using some type of machine to get them.

There was a Popular Science article about this a couple months ago... I still probably have that issue in my school locker.

EDIT: http://www.popsci.com/science/article/2 ... e-asteroid

It goes into greater detail in the actual magazine.

If this results in the launching of the USG Ishimura, we're screwed.

If done only by machines, the cost is far less than sending men. That's the problem with going back to the moon for the USA, the safety regulations and such probably cost more than anything else for the entire mission. Safety back in the 1960's was considered, but probably wasn't the #1 goal like it is today.....I mean just look at the cars these days.....wow!

And going to the moon wouldn't have made much money. Sure some memorabilia, but no profit. Mining an asteroid for platinum via machines = $$$$$$$$

I see this happening within my lifetime for sure.

Has anyone else seen Moon? Because the potential for companies turning into un-regulatable Fuzzy Bunny is the first thing that concerns me.

I don't think the government will have anything to do with this until it really takes off. Even then, they might not get that big of a share. Keep in mind this is all done by private companies, not the gov't.
