As the title says, my microphone won't work with Team Fortress 2 at all.
I have a Microsoft LifeChat LX-3000. The USB is in the back.
All volume settings are turned up, recording software is set to LifeChat LX-3000. It is not on mute.
I have Realtek HD Audio Manager, if that helps with anything. I have tried the 'test' function on Steam.
Anything else, ask.

To be completely honest, I am stumped. It has worked with ventrilo fine, it's not that old (about 1, maybe 2 years).

If it has worked before and just stopped working, it could easily be the mic itself. I don't know how many times I've used a mic and it shorts out on me or some other unknown reason.
From my experience mics tend to take a lot of beating whether it be accidental falling on the ground, animals chewing on them, etc. Now that I'm older it doesn't happen too often, but I'll get that random "whoops" moment every now and then.

Do you have any other headsets to test and see if it might be the mic itself?
Turtle Beaches are the way to go. :)

Nope, I don't have any other headphones to test it with.
It could be that I have bumped it and killed it somehow, but I just want to be extra sure.

Sorry for the late reply, it does work. So I open up TF2 then test it, now it's not working. I close it and then the mic doesn't work again until later, any reason why this might happen?

Hmm, would that also explain it not working after I close tf2?

Strangely Steam changes alot of things. I have a Mic on my webcam, and because my PC knows when i plug and unplug things, If i play L4D without my normal mic plugged in - Steam sets the default on the whole PC to use my Webcam mic, Which is horrable sound quality and spikes alot of the time.

So yes, Steam changes things system wide, not just steam wide.

Re-bumping.
Mics don't work on this PC at all, details in OP. Basically, Realtek HD, both usb and plug mics won't work.

Go to the task bar, right click on the sounds icon (looks like a speaker), select the "recording devices" option. Make sure your mic is plugged in.

Can you give me a list of all possible audio devices? Furthermore, check to see if any devices are disabled (right click on any option and select "show disabled devices" if it is unchecked). Enable all of them.

Furthermore, after enabling all devices, speak into your microphone, and see if any of them show signs of input received.

Depending on the above, I will help you out from there.

Which version of Windows?

I haven't got anything that says sounds, nor an icon that gives me the option to select "Recording devices". I'm on Windows XP if that might explain why.
If it might help, I went into Sounds and Audio Device properties and got a list of what I can choose for voice recording.
Realtek HD Audio Input
Realtek HD Digital Input
Microsoft LX-3000
