I decided to connect a wireless router to my modem/router to allow more available LAN-ports and usage of wireless connections. Unfortunately, I haven't succeeded at that. And that's where you guys come in. :awesome:

So this is my set-up.

- I turned off DHCP on the Linksys router and connected it to the Thomson-modem/router with an Ethernet-cable in LAN-ports in both ends.
- Btw, my ISP has Fuzzy Bunny blocked access to the configurations on the Thomson-router (you know, by typing 192.168.1.1 in the browser).

So what more do I need to do to make it work?

It needs to be setup as an access point.

Can you tell me, step by step, how to achieve that?

You can't do it by hooking it into the output ports that's for sure..

Usually how it works is each router has 1 "In" port
and 4 "out" ports

And then most modems have just an output port.

So then you hook the out port of the modem to the in port on the router.

--
In your case, your modem is also your first router.
So what you need to do is plug any out port on your modem/router to the input port on your router.

I believe that would be the ethernet port on the router.

That's how we did it at our house.
Just stringing a cable from the 1-4 ports on the first router to the
non-numbered input port on the second.. so it should work for yours.

What Znath said.

The output port on your first router needs to feed into the input port on your second router. The input port should be labeled 'Uplink' on the WRT54G. So essentially the right side of your diagram above is correct, you just need to connect the connector cable to the 'Ethernet' port as opposed to output #4.

I've tried all of that, but it still doesn't work, so it's mindboggling to me. <<

By the way, I managed to make it work a little bit with my setup. As in one computer on the Linksys end managed to get a connection. Then I rebooted the Linksys-router and nothing worked again.

Any other suggestions?

Quick edit: You will probably want to setup your wireless security settings before doing any of the steps after resetting to factory default.

Let's see if this helps you. I'll do it in a list of steps.

1. Since you can't login to the router/modem your isp supplied, go into a command prompt on a pc connected to that modem/router and type in "ipconfig" without quotations. Write down what is listed under IPv4, Default Gateway, and Subnet Mask.

2. Reset the linksys to factory defaults by holding down the reset button on the back of the router for 10 seconds.

3. Login to the linksys router using the default info which I'm sure you know is 192.168.1.1 , user is admin, password should also be admin.

4.At this point you should be at the home screen of the linksys showing basic setup.

5. Next navigate to the tab that says advanced routing on the top right. Click the dropdown box that says gateway and change it to router. Next on the same screen change the RIP as it's called on my router to the LAN&Wireless setting. Save settings and it should refresh automatically.

5. Now head back to the basic setup screen. Here there should be an area that says local IP address and subnet mask. Make sure the subnet mask is the same as the one you wrote down from when you checked the IPconfig on your pc. Normally the subnet mask will be 255.255.255.0

6. Now you will have to change the router IP to something different. From lack of information from the router supplied by your ISP I would try changing it to whatever your Default gateway is except change the last digit to a 2. So for example, if your default gateway is 192.168.0.1, change the local ip of the linksys to 192.168.0.2. Since I am unsure what your default gateway is I can't really tell you exactly what to change it to. This may have to be changed but this is what we will start with.

7. Now go ahead and click the checkbox to disable DHCP and might as well make sure the timezone is correct and save these settings. For some reason at this point my router will not refresh and gives a timeout message, if yours does this it's okay and it still saved your settings.

8. Now plug a cable in from one of the LAN ports on your modem/router into one of the LAN ports on your linksys. NOT into the port labeled "internet" or in your picture labeled "ethernet". It will not work if plugged into that port. Then go ahead and power cycle your linksys for good measure.

9. That's it, at this point everything should be working. This is exactly how I have mine setup and it works great. Though I run a WRT54GL so some information may be slightly different.

Hope this helps.

If this doesn't work can you post the results that came up for your Default Gateway and IPV4 address?

you need to make sure there both on the same subnet too.

Hooking up like that does work though

Turns out I just needed to connect an Ethernet-cable between one of the Thomson's LAN-ports and the Linksys' Internet-port. I had already done that a bajillion times before and it never worked. Till it magically did today.

But I saved those instructions of yours, Seifer, for a later occasion if I'll need it sometime. So thanks for that at least.

Thread may be locked up.
