I'm Sirangetta.
I sometimes return to RV and glimpse at something that at one time, stood strong and proud. Just to think, there was a heartbeat here not many years ago. You could very easily refresh the index page on here and have something new to talk about. The markets, thriving! The community atmosphere, pumping! It was intense, the chat room constantly full after Meepster spent months trying to improve it, the in-game events created were a testament to the creativity and free thinking of those who played together.
I can remember hosting a few events and its amazing to think that we had something going here, the amount of fun I had back in the prime of 2005-2007, some of my besting online gaming years. I never did reach level 126 and quite embarrassingly, even though we don't talk now, one of my best friends at that time managed to get there and he only knew about Runescape when I told him and I knew about it for years before he did! Can you believe it? Oh well, haha..

We carved memories on Runescape, we made communities that spawned out of Runescape and into the real world where we all could share ideas and play games together. Today I think kids of this generation forget what real gaming is, it's not something you necessarily pick up with your hands like a console gaming pad and it's not something that you can flick around and multi-touch on your iPad. It's not about selling out a game's idea and turning it into a lucrative profit maker..

Sometimes games are in essence, very simple ideas. And those ideas are basic; getting people together and having fun. Assume a role and build up knowledge about your adventure lands, the clans you later join and the communities you side with. I can remember when RV was toe to toe with Tip.It, arguably one of the best Runescape fansites ever created. We were up there and it was being part of a reputable community that made me feel happy about playing Runescape as much as I did. Later building up some pretty cool friendships with members here on RV and spawning into real life positivity for me to enjoy myself in and out of online communities. Where you can make friends AND have fun? You'd of been crazy not to choose to play.
I look at Runescape now, and see how much it's changed. It's turned from a project at Jagex to an enterprise, a huge money maker. It's not just a game now, it's a company, it's a brand. And I think that can destroy games and make their developers greedy for fame and fortune rather than the main purpose of creating a game, to make people happy. Who knows, maybe Runescape is still as cool as it was back when I used to play, hell it might even be better. But I don't think I'll be playing any time soon. And I still firmly believe the best years of Runescape go well back into the early 2000's. I registered here in 2004, that's now 11 years ago. 11 years. 11 whole years man, it kinda... blows you away how heart warming and spiritually calming it is to have a community that was like RV back in the day, and it goes to show the impact the site had when 11 years is a long time when you think about it, I'm 11 years older and guess what? I'm still back here trying to get myself a pint pulled but it seems like the village pub has all but pulled it's last alcoholic beverage to it's patrons.

I'm having difficult in my life at the minute, as we all do. As we all get older, we accept more responsibility and with more responsibility comes less time to really care about what matters. And sometimes all that can make you happy is the main premise of why I'm here right now writing this message, the smallest things can make you happy like Runescape. And I can still find that heartbeat here at RV now when I just stop typing for a second and relive those days again.

But hey, you have to grow up sometime, right?
To anyone, old and new here. I wish you the best of luck in your lives. All the joy and happiness you can ever imagine. I want to say hi, regardless of whether they/you/my friends read this or not, and to all my old friends here on RV. I think if I wasn't getting so old and stupid, I'd probably still play to this day. And I'd still give you a run for your money!

I wanna thank whoever it is who's keeping the site open, the person keeping RV alive is Jaron. Cheers man, you've been an amazing spirit in preserving RV and keeping it open. You've been a testament to the ideology of community we all inherited here. And that goes for anyone else I've missed out too.

I'd also like to say R.I.P Hiker. The original founder of RV. I've only just opening the PM sent October 2014 last year. Despite all the issues that led to the demise of RV in hiker's personal life, this was a booming community he established and we must focus on the positives. The man created one of the most successful Runescape communities in the world. I personally didn't know the man and 99% of this community will be at the same odds, and so we can only judge on what comes to light throughout our lifetimes. It came as a shock when I heard how RV crashed but it has also come as a shock now to hear the man who created it has passed away. I think this comes as a valuable example of how to lead your life and the decisions you make that will alter those last remaining years of it. We all die, some naturally, some due to illness. A death is a death, it marks the end of someone's life. Hiker has died, R.I.P. I never knew you but you did amazing things for Runescape.

Thanks RV, for being there when I wanted to have fun and be happy. Runescape had me in my element, I wouldn't move for hours and to pay £10 a month to get even better features? Win-Win in my opinion. I met a lot of people and had some amazing experiences offline and online and it comes as quite worrying yet natural feeling to understand that everything at one point, must come to an end. And within those words, take it how you will.

Nice meeting you all. Thanks for the memories but my life must go on, and looking back now over the past 11 years - it puts into perspective how decisions we make impact not only the present but the future.

I love you RV and I always will.

Yours,
Sirangetta

Hey dude!
Thanks for popping in :)

We all have had a love for the game, community, and the friends we have made along the way.
You mentioned that you are having a bit of a tough time lately... we all get a little beat up. If there is anything I can tell you from my experiences, it's that if you take care of yourself first, and try your best, then things will fall into place.
Everyone who's worth anything will respect a hard working individual that truely gives a damn about what they do.
Its awesome that you thought of RV in your time of need! :D

Wishing you the best!

That was really nicely written, Sirangetta. Thank you. (And just as good a response, Market!)

You hit a lot of points I often feel as well, Sirangetta. I joined RuneVillage just two weeks after you, so it's been 11 years for me, too. I can very much remember all those days of refreshing the page to see new posts all over the board, or in the case of some of the most popular times and topics like Eon8, refreshing the page and there's 20 new posts and by the time you've read them all there's 20 more. Back when I started I had to steer clear of the RuneScape General Discussion forums because there simply wasn't enough hours in the day to look at it all!

Yet RV was just as huge a part of my life back then, especially in 2004-2007. I had a lot of good times, a lot of bad times, and a lot of great times. I spent a huge amount of my youth playing an online MMO, but I don't regret it at all, and I think you can't really get today what we had back then. Times have changed too much. Back before there was a Wiki for every game and volunteers compiled data on the best ways to level up, and back when the lack of the Grand Exchange meant our market stalls were booming. That's not to stay things are worse now, (or necessarily even better.) But they're certainly different.

Also, just as an aside, I'm pretty much the one running the site now. When we were trying to decide what to do with the current costly server, we ended up moving it to one I was already paying for, and things have gone pretty well since then. There were a few people back then that felt we should just let RV go and call it a successful decade--and I can totally understand how they felt, and in certain aspects I didn't disagree with them. But seeing a post like this from someone like you, someone who can think back on what we all shared 11 years ago and take solace in seeing it still exists in one form or another--that makes all of this worth it.

Take care, Sirangetta. I do hope whatever troubles life is currently giving you start to ease up on you soon.

You're a great guy, thanks so much for what you are doing. It's kinda unsettling when you think... the doors are firmly shut, the cobwebs linger of spiders who vacated years ago, the creaking of broken window fittings, dust settled on the furniture and the man who created it all, gone. The RV pub sign outside, falling off it's rusting hinges. The homeless man with a tale to tell hobbling over to tell you the magical story of what once was. All those years ago.

The story about the house that Hiker built, the house that became the pub and still is to this day, called the very same thing. This house would not stand without him. He came up with an idea of getting everyone from Runescape into a community, a community that spawned into one of the biggest groups of ALL time.

So let's not judge. This place was and still will be a fantastic place, everyone has their own dark secrets, some people get sick and do stupid things, some are just silly, some are not. We are all men or women, we are all walking the same path from birth to death. And it's what we do in those moments in our lives that give us a moment's rest at the end of it all having done everything you wanted, but have you done everything you've ever wanted? Have you been fair? Have you been putting on your smiling face a few days out of the week? Have you been making someone else's life better? We can all rest well in the knowledge that in those moments of our lives whether young or old, black or white, fat or skinny, bald or waistline hair, rocker or hip hopper, scene kid or scary kid, pot smoker or positively sober, American or British, French or Canadian, African or Chinese (and everyone else in between). We, came, together. And that is one thing humanity as a group of living people, needs to learn from. We all can come together, and if a game can unite us then think what else can...

I guess... it's just nice to know that these usernames we see, Jaron, Hiker, Henner, Market Man6, Sirangetta..
These are all usernames that have a person behind them. A person with their own story. And I don't think we as humans realize how close we can get to someone whilst being so far away. I guess then we are all going in the same direction, only we are all involved in our own lives and might sadly never ever bump into each other. It's weird how there's so many of us living on this planet yet, we could be ten minutes or 1,000 miles away from each other at any one point.
I will keep coming back from time to time, but I probably won't be posting anything which is why I felt it necessary to come out from the wood work and show my appreciation for this amazing legendary community, this history stricken website. Runevillage.
Thanks Jaron, you're an amazing person and you've helped to maintain the spirit of something I believe we all hold dear to our hearts whether in the past time or in present life. The truth is, maybe we don't don our dragon swords and our gilded armors and our rare halloween masks and party hats. But at one point in our lives, this place opened the doors to us and kept us engaged and entertained for hours and what you're doing is keeping that magic alive.

God bless.
Jaron, thanks so much. Just know what you have done and what you are doing now is being noticed, whether apparent or not, we all appreciate your hard work and commitment to keeping RV alive and should it go down, you'd of been the last man standing.
May you live a life only you would want to live, I hope your life brings you everything you ever want. What you have done are you are doing now takes heart. To unconditionally selflessly keep alive the spirit of a website alive even if it left years ago. You don't have to do this, maybe even.. the new world wouldn't even miss RV.
But you know what?
I would. And I know the mods that have come and gone, the staff members and the heart of the community in it's tens of thousands wouldn't refuse going back down memory lane even if just once if it meant reliving our Runevillage days. On that note, we are ALL part of history. We've all done something remarkable. And you've been the one to preserve it firmly into history.

We're all proud of you Jaron :)

I'll always love Runevillage.
Sirangetta.

You're not dying are you? :spite:

Good read though and always good to see an old face. Obviously those of us that remain feel a similar way or we wouldn't still be here!

Hey! I will be honest, I don't recognise your name so unfortunately I can't say I do remember you but that's not to say that your post wasn't a great read because it definately was!

Reading that has brought back many memories of how things used to be and seeing things change to me was difficult.

But thank you for posting this Sirangetta, its been a pleasure to read and I wish we had known each other back in the day as you seem such a nice person :)

Thanks, Sirangetta. :) I'm not doing it to be noticed, but like you said, the place that RV holds in my heart is so unbelievably huge that if I had a way to preserve it, even like this, I'd make sure that happens.

Hah, that's a scary thought! But also not incorrect, I guess, come to think of it. (I'm taking monthly backups these days though so if anything were to happen we should still be good.)

I completely agree. It's so weird; for example, back in the day, A5chow and Applequest were people I admired, and then suddenly Chow is a girl and also they're dating and later they're married and now all of a sudden they're going to have a kid soon! I've been plowing ahead with my own life, but that doesn't mean the rest of the world stops to let me catch up. Everyone here has something going on, and it's so neat and/or humbling to see it in action.

It's really cool what you're doing.
You should send a massive email out if you can harvest everyone's emails from the cp and see who responds and maybe get everyone onboard for an hour or so.

I don't know guys, maybe I'm just a soppy fool but when I think of Runescape - all I think is happiness. Some good times!

It is surprising how many people were here just because of the RS side to things. You would think more people would have hung around just because of the people they had met and the friends they have made.

I understand that people change and we all have lives to be getting on with and i for one cannot say anything because I too disappeared for some time but upon returning, even with the few people that are left here, I felt instantly at home :P
