Still awaiting a release for a Runescape app for my Droid. I found one that slightly works called RuneTek 5... but it isn't anything I can use on a normal basis. It shouldn't be a problem making one seeing the Android OS runs on JAVA, just like RS. But while we wait, the idea for a Rune Village app came to mind. Decided to post the idea on here to get some feedback, and a possible answer for those of us who need to stay well informed with this community. I'm on here posting this from my Droid's browser, and the words appear several seconds after I type them. An app would resolve the laggy typing issue and make logging in and navigating the website a breeze :)

As a member of the droid master race, I concur. A version of the forums that's just optimised for phones would make more sense, though.

I spoke to someone about it shortly after getting my phone. They thought they could put one together but I haven't heard anything since and doubt they ever decided to work on it.

In all honesty we need to get our site up to speed before we tackle extensions of the site.

I've been a member on here for 7 years. I'd say that it has been and is very much up to speed. The only thing new on here is more users, different artwork, and a few new sections. That's it. Maybe Hiker will give me the go ahead to design an app for the community so him and the rest of the admins and mods can focus on maintaining the site in it's whole.

If you want a prompt response, you should email him at hiker(at)runevillage(dot)com. I'm sure you'll be able to work with him about this.

That's the plan. If nobody else wants to or can design an app, I'd be happy to, and I'm sure a lot of others would too.

Our Guides are nowhere near up to date. But if Hiker gives the go ahead, good luck with this! It will definitely be helpful! :D

I'd do it even if I was the only person who used it.

Are you talking only a Droid app, or Java, or..?
If you create one that only works on a specific platform, people with other phones are probably going to request one for theirs. Myself included (Bada user 8) )

Well, I wanted to find the BIOS that is used on "Angry Birds", seeing it's available on both the Android and iPhone app stores. I'm thinking it's the exact same platform, just optimized for the Mac OS, Google OS, and any other smart phone. I don't see it being anything incredibly difficult to do for something like this because RV is 97% reading and typing, 3% pictures. Could it really be that hard to make an app that can view something like that on any smart phone platform?

Funny this topic should come up again... Henner and I have been discussing a mobile version of RV for the paste several days. Henner and Jack, and i think maybe donut and Goten, also had some discussons about this in the RV2.0 hidden forum.

Let me tell you what we think.... and where we are.

1 - We already own the "runevillage.mobi" domain.

2 - We *think* since the forum is entirely data-driven, that we could make a mobi version simply by creating another CSS style sheet for the forum, which would decrease the page size and omit many of the graphics.

3- If we are correct about #2, we could make a mirror of the runevillage.com forum on runevillage.mobi. Users could access it directly by simply going to "mobi" instead of com.

4 - We know that the "http referrer" data would tell us what browser is being used and if it's a mobile browser, we could automatically redirect users from 'com" to 'mobi'

5 - We know we could add a link on the menu, in case the referrer info failed for some reason, that would manually redirect the user to 'mobi'

This would not be specific to android, but should work for any mobile device.

Which is fine for the forum. However, much of the main site currently consists of hard-coded pages. One of the tasks involved in RV2.0 is converting all of the hard-coded pages to data contained in a database.

The obvious purpose of this is to make the main site entirely data-driven, just like the forum... when we have that in place, a similar set-up to what I outlined above would also work for the main site. It cannot work as long as we have hard-coded pages.

So a mobile version of the main site cannot be accomplished until we pretty much complete RV 2.0.

But the forum is doable now, and we're moving forward with that idea.

I can't promise how quickly this could be done, unless one or more of you would like to volunteer for the project. That is our main problem with RV 2.0, among other projects right now-- the lack of some programming and other technical expertise to work on the project.

And magic, or anyone else for that matter, we'd be glad to hear your ideas for additional program utilities to support the site.

Hiker's spot on (as usual :P ). A mobile version of the site would be much better than an app.

Just take a loot at m.facebook.com or touch.facebook.com next time you have your phone handy ;)

Shouldn't be too hard to do at all..

m.facebook and touch.facebook are perfect examples of how the actual Facebook app is better though. They have far far less features and take 2x longer to load the material, no matter how good your connection is. the only benefit of the mobile site is you can change your profile picture. you cant do that with the app or on the touch site. aside from that, there are no chat features on the browser pages unless viewed in full site mode. the App makes every feature available and organized on 1 screen. a mobile version for RV wuld be great either way. it will still load much faster then the full page and for those of us with Droids, we can run the Chat from RV on our phones. an App just seems a lot easier to make, and it would be more reliable then your phones browser.

Edit: Oh, and you already know I'm volunteering to help in any way. To me, a mobile version for the site, app or not, would be of great use to me. So helping make it happen makes it that much better :]

Merged your double posts. ~Tanks
