As many of you know, this time of year we usually select some new Villagers to carry the title of "Legend" in our community.

Before making the announcement, let me explain a bit about how selections are made, not only for the new folks, but as a reminder for everyone else as well.

The entire process is handled by the mods. We don't have any set number of nominations and there is a predetermined percent of votes cast that a nominee must get to be selected.

In an effort to ensure that it's not simply a popularity contest, we do not allow simple "yes" or "no" votes. First to place a name into nomination, an explanation must be given as to what makes a candidate "legendary" in the Village. A topic is made for each candidate, and votes entered into a topic poll. Each vote must have a corresponding post in the topic, and each "yes" or "no" vote must also include an explanation of why the person voted the way they did.

As a result of this requirement for explanations, there are also discussions about a candidate's past and present activity-- they must be active all across the site, not just in one area-- their helpfulness to others, and their general conduct. Candidates cannot currently have any "steps" or bans. Length of membership is not usually considered.

Being a Legend is not so much a rank as it is a recognition. The only thing you get by being selected is a nifty icon and membership in the Legends Forum, where lively discussions take place, and monthly themes are determined. Being a Legend does not give you extra points toward becoming a mod-- we have mods who have been Legends, and some who have not.

Like always, I want to recognize everyone. Especially these days when we have so many good people in the Village, and so many who have been great Villagers for a long time. But it just wouldn't work if we made *everyone* a Legend. So there are many deserving people who are not on this list. But that does not mean that they (you) will not be selected in the future. Not being selected in many cases simply means that we can't pick everyone.

We had over a dozen nominations this time around, and it was a difficult process for us to eliminate any of them. Sometimes this required the splitting of hairs to make decisions. So if you felt that your name should have been on this list, but it's not, it does not mean that you were found wanting.

So without further comment, let me announce the Legends for this year. I hope you'll agree that they are all Legendary Villagers and congratulate them on the recognition.

TheAnimal (currently St. Nick)
