In case you read the topics in Hiker's Campfire, this announcement doesn't really come as a surprise, but if you didn't: the chat has been redone!

The Flash-based chat that we used to have had the tendency to require a lot of server resources when a lot of people were in there, which slowed down the server and used up a lot of bandwidth. This encouraged us to redo the code of the Meepster chat we used to have in the past. Fantasy_guy (now known as Fire_Adept) put a lot of time into rewriting the server back-end completely in very clean and expandable C++. The last couple of weeks Thyker and me made the final adjustments to make the server and client programs ready for release. So thank you Fire_Adept and Thyker for your help in this!

The chat is now located at http://www.runevillage.com/RVChat/. Any links to the previous chat should redirect you to there from now on.

At the very moment, we're still missing MeepBot, but we're working hard to build the bot again and we'll do our very best to make it better than ever!

i just logged in a minute ago. it is so awesome! brings back a lot of awesome memories.

everyone should try to visit chat regularly, for real. RV Chat is an awesome place when its active. I think rv chat really strengthened the sense of community around here when it was in its prime. It's a good time for RV Chat to come back, what with RV in its grand revival and all.

Super special awesome. It looks beautiful.

But it would look more beautiful if we could replace to solid gray backgrounds with some textured backgrounds. You said this would be hard to do but if you ever get the time to mess around with it I think me and Jackstick could come up with something. :awesome:

Big thanks to fant who got the ball rolling and laid the ground work. Cheers to Glod and Thyker for making it complete and workable. Thanks to Jaron for all his work on the flash chat over the time we have been using it. I know I hated it along with many others.. but he at least made it work for us and entertaining. While it wasn't the same he did still manage to add in meepbot and some functionality. Looks like the bell will live on to ever remind us of flash chat

Users should be changed to reflect their colour on the forums, rather than black.

If we were going to change the entire colour scheme over one user's complaints, at least do it 100%.
Edit: Also the "Who is chatting" box seems to be broken since the switch over -- perhaps this can be looked at?

Well it used to be blue back in the day, but thats now taken up by admins, I don't think black is so bad, theres not that many usable colours to choose from, I guess we could be green.

Yeah but I can't tell system enter/leaving messages apart from user's speech well at all because everything's black. Blue usernames would be SO much more preferred. Back in the day, admins were brownish anyway.

On the color thing, red, which used to be chat mods, is no longer used, and could be used instead, depending on peoples opinions.

AND A NOTE FOR ANY UBUNTU USERS (which is probably just me), I noticed when I upgraded to a newer version of Ubuntu the IcedTea java plugin had troubles with the chat, to make sure it runs smoothly, follow the instructions here to install the java browser plugin.

EDIT: Also Glodenox and I were discussing how to best implement a bot. It's not as easy as it sounds to make something that works and is elegant. Rest assured, a bot is coming sometime in the future.

It's a shame that the issue of colours comes up now... We've had it running for a couple of weeks exactly to make sure issues like this one would've been fixed before release

Thanks to Fantasy_Guy, Thyker, and Glodenox for all the hard work to make this happen....

And also to Jaron who "tweaked" the "temporary" flash chat for years! ...

And just like Jaron seemed to be continually making tweaks and changes, I'm sure that Glode,Thyker, and Fant will be tweaking and modifying this chat as we go along ....

But once again, we have our very own custom chat, written just for us.. and that's a good thing.

I logged onto it the other day on the test server and it really looked good...

I can't promise to log in a lot-- i'm not much of a chatter, as the folks in RV Lounge can attest to... but i'll drop by from time-to-time just to see what's up....
