Well.. it's not quite as bad as usual....

When we had the 'war chest' drive, we got enough donated to pay for 3 months hosting, which expires this month, so we're coming up on the first payment due since we moved. There's also some domains due this month, which adds about $30 to our outstanding bills.

We have had a few donations come in over the past three months, but not quite enough to cover another 3-month payment and pay the domains.

I can take what we have, and make a one-month payment and carry over the balance until next month, or if some folks would like to send a donation or two in the next day or so, I can make another 3-month payment, and save us $15 on the costs (you get a discount for a 3-month payment). The domains get paid either way.

So this is not the usual grovel and beg, but we *could* save some money if you're about to make a donation soon anyway. Otherwise, I'll just pay for one month and we push on.

Thanks!

I don't use this place much since I still consider myself retired, just coming back to talk about certain topics from time to time, but done.

HOLD IT! WE HAVE A WINNER!

Thanks to some Villagers stepping forward, we did get enough to go ahead with another 3-month payment, and the domains that were due! (and saved us $15 bucks on the deal!)

We even got a little extra to carry over into the treasury for next time!

However, even with that, and with the regular donors we have with subscriptions, we'll still need some more in the next 90 days to make the next quarter-- so Muse... don't forget us when you get back from vacation, but now you got some time to save up a good donation! :P

Thanks everybody!

Just curious, how much does a dedicated server cost and what specs does it need? :-s

Runevillage the forum is pretty well much done. Runevillage the group will eventually die, but as long as we're still friends with each other in the end, it's still a pretty big thought in our heads. Runevillage the family is forever, no matter where we settle down. If absolutely nothing else ever comes of Runevillage in the future, that alone is a pretty damn awesome thought.

We don't give out the monthly cost, but take it from me: it's an acceptable cost for what we get.

Greetings,
Glodenox

I myself pay for a complete site, 10x the size of RV and the costs are quite cheap. I never got why does this site cost so much money. We have 3 domains, and over 18 pages on our homepage all free from our host, we also have a huge database security system.

IP boards are so much cheaper and very easy to use.

RV is pretty much forced to pay for more domains than you do, simply because if we to were let one of the more known domains go, it's possible that some scam site (e.g., a gold selling site) could use a domain RV doesn't have registered (like .us), use the RV name and make it appear that this fake RV site is somehow affiliated with the real RV. That was my understanding of it, when it was explained a while back why we pay for the number of domains we do.

How is IP cheap when you pay for a lisense? And this site has a very large database as well as a lot of files. I highly doubt you're getting a website hosted for free that's 10x larger than runevillage...

actually, our costs have been going down the past few years, and we're getting more for our money than we have in the past. Even if we don't take the 3-month discount, our monthly fees currently are less than on the previous host, and we have more disk space and more bandwidth on a virtual private server.

And yes, we don't release financial figures about the Village, just for reasons you can see here-- we don't need the entire village to monday-morning quarterback what we do. But Glodenox and Zapp were in on the decision of which server to use this time, so they are aware of that particular cost, and as Glode said above, we're paying a reasonable fee for the services we're getting.

And yes, The Animal is correct -- one of the reasons we have so many domains is to protect our 'good name' - we also have some that were purchased with a specific use in mind.

And i'd be suprised at a free host, or even one that was much less expensive that could support what we need with our thousands of image files, hundreds of pages on the main site, and over a half gig of data on file.

But... like i said in the original post, the good news was that if we only paid a single month, like we had been doing in the past with the old host, we would have had enough funds on hand-- we just didn't quite have enough for a 3-month payment, which is optional, but earns us a discount if we can make it.

The cash that we *did* have on hand was mainly from the few Villagers who have monthly donation subscriptions. We just needed a little more to even it out and make that discount.

Thanks again to everyone who's chipped in-- the regular subscribers and those who randomly contribute!
