That happens from time to time when too many connections are open to the server.
With phpbb3 we hoped this would no longer take place, but it appears there's still some sort of crawler (the things used by search engines to crawl through the web for information) which isn't caught by the system...

If crawlers are getting through then this could pose a threat to the homework help forum, or am I wrong and lost?

It's pretty obvious what happened there if you actually read what it says. You don't have to be a nuclear engineer to guess what's wrong if that error message comes.

Would this kind of error cause RV to lag before and after the downtime? Cuz I've been getting so much lag lately. The forums and chatroom both tend to die for me every now and then. Started happening about a week ago.

Same here Jackstick. The forums go down nearly every night for me.

I got that message like twice, and went to the Chat to ask what happened, but then it worked again.
I think it takes about 5 minutes

The point is, that there is probably a crawler that we haven't spotted yet. A bot that works for search engines. They open a lot of connections to the database, basically doubling every connection the villagers make.

So yea, when the bot sees the error message, they are forced to close their connection, because basically, there isn't a lot to connect to anymore. With as a result, in a little time, the amount of connections is under the maximum again, and you will be able to access RV once more.

I've found a very handy list of all kinds of crawlers/bots/spiders that should be recognised on forums.

Added 30 or so of them already and it seems like three of those visited our forum not too long ago. I'll be adding more names when I have time for it, but I'm sure this will help greatly already :)

That would mean the end of the Staff Administrator rank (unless of course I'd let someone else become one)... But nah, I feel good in my current position. I'm glad I don't have to take care of non-technical forum issues.

Besides, I don't need a rank to know that my work is appreciated :)

Hey now, there's no reason to be mean. The first forum rule says "Do not insult or degrade any individuals." You may want to re-read them, since you're new here. Thanks! -Jaron

As a matter of fact, his English is much better than mine :o
He would make a good Staff Administrator seeing he has a good knowledge of English and is a good HTML programmer. Right now you are actually the person who looks like an idiot to be honest :-s .

I can say however that I currently don't need any additional help as an Administrator. For most staff areas leaders have been chosen who help me maintain the whole system. As long as I am not overwhelmed with work, all is fine.
