Introduction

The Assist System, released the 12th of November, 2007 is a system that allows a player to use the skills of another player to receive items in exchange, that they wouldn't have been able to make before due to their level in that particular skill being too low.

Before this update, if you wanted your sharks cooked, you would have to give them to a player and have them cook them for you, and potentially stealing them. With the Assist System, you are now able to cook them yourself, even if you do not have the required levels, with the assistance of another player who does have the required levels.

Please note, there are skills that the Assist System cannot be used with, these skills are:
  • Hitpoints
  • Attack
  • Strength
  • Ranged
  • Prayer
  • Defence
  • Slayer
  • Agility
  • Firemaking
  • Thieving
  • Woodcutting
  • Mining
  • Fishing
  • Hunter
This is because the system is designed to help players work with resources they already have, not to help them gather those resources or fight.

How to use the Assist System

If You're Requiring Assistance

Firstly, make certain the player who you're requiring assistance from has the 'Accept Aid' option on. (Accept Aid can be toggled ON or OFF by clicking the wrench icon and clicking on the medical bag)

Secondly, right click the player and select, 'Req Assist'.

Please note, when you're being assisted, the following image will show in the bottom left corner of your screen:

If You're Lending Assistance

A pink message will appear in your chatbox.

Click this for an interface to appear on your screen.

At this point, click the name of the skill(s) in which you're lending assistance in. (If you're helping a player smith a mithril skirt, select 'Smithing XP') The icon(s) will then turn blue after selected.

After selecting the skill, you're now free to sit back, relax, and talk with friends while you receive XP while the other player does the work. The other player will be able to do any of the skills selected for as long as they're highlighted, and as long as they're within twenty squares of you.

To toggle who can require your assistance, toggle the 'Assist' button found by 'Clan' and 'Trade'.

Please note, when you're lending assistance you cannot move. If you decide to move you will cease helping the person.

FAQ

Q: Can I earn infinite XP from this? It seems too good to be true!
A: Alas, you cannot. The maximum XP able to be collected in a 24 hour period is 30,000 XP.

Q: Can I use the Assist System to gain access to skill-restricted areas, such as guilds?
A: No, you cannot.

Q: Can I assist someone with a quest, or an Achievement Diary or a minigame?
A: No. In reference to Achievement Diaries, the task that they were helped in will not be marked correct.

Q: Ah ha! I'm a non-member, with this I can access help with members skills, eh?
A: No, non-members cannot be assisted with members' skills.

Q: Does a player have to help me?
A: No, it's all up to them if they'd like to help you. If a player will not, simply find another player who will.

Q: Okay, but Player Moderators have to help me, right!?
A: No, nor do Player Moderators.

Q: Are there any restrictions for those skills that can be assisted in?
A: Yes, the following is an image from RuneScape's Knowledge Base detailing the exceptions:

I'll leave this open for a bit before moving for editing.

"No, i will never succeed, but somebody has to start."

Runevillage the forum is pretty well much done. Runevillage the group will eventually die, but as long as we're still friends with each other in the end, it's still a pretty big thought in our heads. Runevillage the family is forever, no matter where we settle down. If absolutely nothing else ever comes of Runevillage in the future, that alone is a pretty damn awesome thought.

Looks good but there is a few things you might want to add.

Mention that when you are assisting someone you cannot move, or do anything at all.

That you see this image in the bottom left corner when you are being assisted: Image

That you can use use this button to control who can ask for assistance: Image

Nice guide! Very very small note: The 30k experience is the total maximum you can receive (in other words it's not 30k experience per skill). Just pointing this out.

His logic is flawless. Topsummoner

I concur. We must lynch him now for the sake of the metagame, we MUST teach people that they can't go around claiming "anniversary" and expect leniency. Topsummoner.
