Post Counts and Attachments

Some people have noticed a reduction in their post counts the past few days.... there are two reasons for this.

(1) on the old board, we had hacked the code so that when a post was deleted, it did not reduce your post count, which is normally computed by actually counting your posts in the database. we had that hack in place for so long, everybody had forgot about it until people started to notice post counts going down.

As a result, the mods no longer delete posts when pruning forums, but simply move them to a hidden forum until we can get that hack back into the code.

So some people would have lost some prior to us making this change about deleted posts.

(2) many of you encountered some database errors from the board in the past couple of days that prevented you from accessing the board, or from making posts. while the 'too many connections' error is pretty common, and not usually harmful, the 2-3 errors that we had together damaged the database.

I was able to repair the database, but in doing so, some posts were lost in the process. We are not able to recover posts that are lost during repair.

Under the new software, we are not usually able to correct post counts, however please notify a board/forum admin if you lost a *really* significient number (like more than a couple of hundred, unless that was all your posts).

Attachments

Many of you have not only noticed, but used the new feature of being able to make attachments to posts. While we are able to disable this feature, we decided to try it out and keep it as long as it's not abused.

The main abuse, is uploading overly large images, or images that you could just as easily upload to photobucket or somewhere else. The attachments are stored on *our* server, and thus consume disk space that we're paying for. As a result, we have set a fairly limited amount of space available for attachments.

So please do not abuse this feature-- please compress images that you upload, and whenever possible, upload elsewhere and use an inline image tag to display the image.

To conserve that disk space, we will be deleting the images from time-to-time as well.

But given thoughtful use, this can be a nice feature for everyone.

Atleast there is a vaild reason for it and Thanks Hiker for clearing up the post problem. I was trying all night/morning yestreday.

I did notice this... I'm all way down to around 1700 again >_< I was at like 1850-1900

Now it gonna take me even longer to reach 2000

I lost 50, no big deal. I'm just glad that was the reason, because I thought that I might of been doing something bad
