To address a couple of common thoughts:

Having an archive available to view old posts, data, etc. - This is the crux of the issue as to why RV costs money to run - We have a ton of users, a ton of posts. All that content takes up space, and all that space costs money. That being said, if I can get some logistics as to the relative size of the entire RV "experience," I could host an archive of it from one of my home servers. I have relatively decent bandwidth (about 20 MBit/s upload), and given our current amount of usage, that would be more than sufficient to access things.

Free, alternative hosting for the forums - I will admit that I haven't dug around on this much, so I don't know what capabilities free hosts will have, but I will say that they will be restrictive (custom-implementing features is probably not going to be easy, or even possible. We may not be able to easily import all of our current content to the new host. Even with unlimited storage, the amount of bandwidth is usually limited, and if it doesn't have a hard cap (you've all been to websites that state they've gone over the allotted bandwidth for the month/day/hour, I bet), there will be soft caps (throttling, server responses being extremely slow). Also, ads are likely a requirement to such free services.

Just a couple of cents.

- Ventrue

my god the feels. I love this place. I grew up here. I'd hate to see it go although it may be approaching the time. I still visit and post whenever I see a topic I can engage myself in. I scroll through at least once a week.

I could never forget the village. It's been a gigantic part of my life. Hell I was scrolling down these pages when I was only 11 years old. Everything that I know about computers I learned from here, this site moulded my sense of humour. Nothing can replace what RV has provided me. I love every single one of you like family.

Thanks everyone.

I will keep visiting and posting until we no longer exist, and if such a thing ever happens, my name is Harjot Kainth. But to be honest, I'll do whatever I can to make sure this place stays. This isn't just a website. This is home, and I don't wish to see it be destroyed.

edit: I just had to add more.

Bah, it took me way too long to get myself around to posting this message. Better late than never, I guess...

This topic reflects the feeling I've been having for the past few months. I've had a great time here so far, learnt tons of things here and got to meet a whole bunch of interesting people. Sadly enough, I couldn't bring myself around to get anything done here. The need to be active here somehow escaped me. I'd love to blame it on the Hiker/Jagex situation, but I feel it has been there for even longer than that...

I don't think we really need to shut down the site or anything. We just don't need the hardware we're currently using for the activity we've got right now. There are plenty of hosts that can easily host us for 40 euros/year as all we really need is MySQL and PHP. We could easily keep the forums online, though they could use a reorganisation by shutting down many of the inactive subsections. As for the main site: I've still got many backups of RuneVillage/The Village's original website. I'm willing to compose a ZIP-file with all the contents that have been created for the website, should people be interested in that. People should not be afraid that the current content will no longer be available, that won't happen.

I personally don't think RuneVillage will ever fully die, but I don't think anybody should get their hopes up that we'll ever get back to what we used to be.

Hey guys, just my two copied cents.

I could btw totally try to store some several TBs of backup on a server btw, maybe even a decent connection to it.

It was always going to be a sad day when the village died, years ago I remember thinking about it and back then I couldn't even imagine it, now it has become a reality.

This place has meant to much to many of us for such a long time, but even if the village does have to end that doesn't mean that the experiences we have made here, the memories, the laughter and the friends have all been for nothing, to fade away with the site.

I haven't been around since Hiker's departure, simply because Hiker WAS runevillage, whether some people think that is for the best or the worst that is the truth of it. It does not mean runevillage has left me however, I still have my archive on my computer of all the fun things we have done here, I still regularly talk to rvers on skype (even though some of them are jerks ZAC) Hell it is through rv that I got to make so many strong friendships that would never have existed otherwise.

It would be nice if we could archive some of the most important posts, but I believe that as a huge expensive site our time is over, if there was some way we could save money and still comunicate with everyone that would be great, there is still a community here, it just doesn't have the interest in runescape anymore (though y'all are welcome to join us on ffxiv!)

Anyone is welcome to hit me up on skype anytime, just search for sarah perkins or my email frizoid@hotmail.co.uk.

It's always the drama topics that bring in the most activity. :awesome:

Hosting inst expensive these days. Keeping RV above wont be difficult. Without management a server would be less than $30 a year.

I do miss the RV activity but it has been dying for a while, Theres probably nothing we can do except get new members. And theres no real reason for people to come to us. The old members from back when RV was popular will all be mid 20's etc and have different lives than back when it was popular.

The download all info would be a good feature and i would be happy to help to make such a thing.

A new name / main domain would likely be needed though because of the amount of negative posts on the google search for RV and would need a lot of work, WHich im not sure would be offered with the current activity levels.

The way I see it RV was made for a generation that has grown up and there wasn't any appeal or reason for new users to join. It's a sad reality but if we can keep it in a simplified form on the cheap then I'm all for it.

I have a few RVers on FB but feel free to add me if you want (Peter Lawton).

Eh, at this point it's time to let it die. The memories will always live on inside of us, but the website has long since sailed its course.

Um.

Yeah...

This thread's making me super sad... I've no idea how long it's been since my last post here, but I've been checking in every couple months or so... I'd read maybe 2-3 posts, go "yup, runevillage is still here. all is right with the world." and wander off on my merry way.

It's really surreal to think that yeah, it can't really be here forever... I'm with Ventrue though - in that we should at least keep a page up. I'd also be willing to throw up a server for it if needed. Personal thought would be putting the forums as they are now in archival mode, and make a single forum (The Campside, or something) that's just for people that want to pop their head in and talk about whatever.

I think a big problem with RV's forums right now is there's way too many forums, thus it's much more visible how little activity there is. A couple forums where a page has 20 topics and only 4 of them are actually active, versus having them all in one forum and the page would be full of active posts.

As it's been so adequately called for a long time, RV's a family. And family's always got a home for it's kids when they want to pop in for a chat. So even if it's not the mighty village it once was, let us at least keep a small, tidy cabin with a nice campfire and the stories of the good old times around.

So, here's a long overdue:

Hi all! It's been a while! How are you doing? :3

Hey there, guys. Good to see so many, old, friendly faces.

Just heard about this recently... Well, I feel the same as everybody else: It sucks. It really, really does. But I wasn't surprised either. We all knew it was coming. :( I also feel like that Runevillage needs to be laid to rest...

I mean, you people were (and probably still are) Fuzzy Bunny' awesome. Even though I barely remember the Runescape days since I haven't played for a looooong time, the feeling the RV community gave me never left me. The parties. The guides. The people. But it is as many of you said: We've all grown up, for better or worse. I would also like to see some kind of archived version of the fansite. It would be great to preserve the memories, indeed.

But I wanna thank you all for making all those years fun ones. I came here to sell willow logs (hence my name) and stayed for you guys... Man, so many nostalgic feelings. Really, thanks for everything.

Been livin'. Playing a few video games every so often(starcraft, warcraft, rsc, rs07). Working lots(and actually getting noticed for it :D ). And looking at the housing market!

Aww, thanks for the nice words, guys (that includes you, Phil :p). :) The reason I stopped was because I grew up, didn't have time to draw anymore and quitting Runescape certainly didn't help either.

Is there an easier way to reach old Runevillagers to tell them about this situation? Maybe like a mass PM-ing?

Fuzzy Bunny. I picked the wrong time--or maybe the right time--to come back and make my quasi-annual return.

From what I'm seeing here, things are not looking good for The Village. Which is a shame, but I'm honestly not that surprised. This site's been running--with a few blips here and there--for over ten years now, right? I joined this site when I was 13, and I don't think it's too crazy to believe that many of us joined around that age as well. In that time, we've all grown up, moved on, and done great things both in real life and in RuneScape. I've gone from the awkward high schooler to a graduate student whose goal in life is to teach chemistry to the awkward high schoolers of the world. Go figure.

This site was such a resource for me when I was younger, and I'll be sad to it go. Honestly, the people here helped me in so many ways. I know I disappeared when college started and have only popped my head in occasionally, but this place was awesome, and it still is awesome. I'll be checking in every few days to see what's going on with all of this... I won't be that helpful, but perhaps I can provide some idiocy for the situation. Also, I can't wait to do this:

The Idiot Has Been Here
