Randomly thought of RV, decided to venture back over, and I see this thread. I'm pretty sure the past times I thought about "venturing back to see how things are", I've seen posts like this.

I agree with this Suicide Messiah here. What is the point of RV? What is keeping people here? Think about the current "age" you are in. The utilities of RuneVillage are practically not needed anymore. Runescape is not that popular anymore, so very few people are going to be running over here looking for a guide or a clan to join.

What utilities? We have no guides, no items databases, or any "utilities" useful to any RS player. RV was destroyed by Jagex's decision to drop RV as a supported fansite, especially after it issued takedowns for our content.

Ah, didn't notice. I just assumed most of that stuff was still up on the website. Jagex even dropped RV as a supported fansite? When did that even happen? Just shows how long its been for me.

[Neku] You missed a lot, Shiki.

Also today's XKCD comic felt quite relevant.

Apologies for such a late reply, I did see the topic about three weeks ago but then went on a camping/fishing trip (life without the internet/computer was refreshing) and wasn't going to reply without reading the entire topic first..

I have a lot more to say but I'll save it for another time..

A downsize of areas to post in was long over due, so good work on who ever took the initiative (Jerkstick??)

I'm in favour of keeping the forums around as a little corner of the internet. If Runevillage went to Facebook I would loose it for ever, I like the anonymity of the internet which gets lost a little when using Facebook..

Obviously cutting back the costs is important. I'm sure those of us that are still around wouldn't mind if pages here took slightly longer to load. I'm not that technologically advanced but I'm sure there's someone out there that would be able to let our small corner of the internet piggy-back from a service for which they are already paying for?

What's keeping me here is the same reason I still pay for runescape membership even when I am no longer playing....having trouble letting go. But since RV doesn't cost money a month, it's much easier to stick around.

People shouldn't "let go" just for the sake of it. Sure, we grow out of things eventually, and we lose interest, and forget about places, but that's just life. But as long as RV is around, i'll still drop by and see what's going on. RV is not like any other sites i frequent. It's not a news site, and indeed it lacks a purpose at this point in time. The thing that drags me back is the community. No other site i've ever visited has a community comparable to RV. People shouldn't quit that community just because it's "dying".

In all honesty, the only reason my activity has picked up in recent month(s) is that feeling of community, and that feeling of belonging. RV means a lot to me, even though my activity in recent years might not indicate that. I'm sure it means a lot to others, and that's a good thing. Because it means people care about RV, and it means that our small corner of the internet is unlikely to dissappear any time soon. It'll be a sad day when it does though.

Kurt offered to host it on his server earlier in the topic IIRC

I also have a surprisingly well-equipped server that only costs 7USD a month that I haven't been able to use for its intended purpose because I can no longer get a certain piece of software belonging to the Valve Corporation to work...

I seriously don't get why you can't get that working... Valve products are just so confounding sometimes, no matter how amazing.

It seems to disagree with my router. However, if I remove the router from the equation, even though I can get it to download, after a couple gigabytes it just stalls, deletes the download progress, and starts over again. Not only can I not get TF2 to update, but I can't really download anything else, either.

Steam has been out for ten blasted years and I've been having trouble with it for eight.

Not enough flexibility. If i read that correctly we'd have to ditch our custom PHPBB3 theme, plus i've no idea how easy it would be to migrate a MySQL database the size of ThePub. I'm assuming it's huge.

There are people willing to host RV themselves and there are much cheaper options if RV want to host themselves. Both of these options allow RV to stay as it is and reduce costs

I would prefer that some sort of 'forum' remain..

I do not game, I do not use Facebook anymore, and therefore if the community transferred to a Social Media platform - i think a few of us would miss out on the opportunity to 'check-in' if we wanted too..

I think a slice of appreciation should be shown to all those that have continued to keep this community alive over the past few years. They deserve a lot of credit and thanks. This was 'home', or an 'escape' for the majority of us. And to be able to return nearly a decade on is a testament to the character of the people that have kept it going.

I know my vote doesn't carry much weight since I essentially abandoned these forums in 2006, but I would prefer to keep these forums alive in some form purely for the nostalgia that comes with it. When I feel particularly vulnerable, I tend to reach back into my past for comfort and to feel the echos of the good times of my past once again. This was my first home. The first time I had ever had a community, the first time I had a group of friends to share my life with. Even reading the list of names of elders has led me to remember people I had forgotten. If this site were obliterated, the people I once shared my life with would fade away forever much faster.

Excluding the online community I've been putting my heart into over the last two months, the village has been the online community I poured the most of myself into. Sure, I posted on other forums afterwards and was involved in other communities, but I never felt as attached to any of them. Around the same time I left the village, I started focusing almost exclusively on real life friends and the friendships I made here were what made that possible.

The welcoming theme of these boards and the knowledge this was once a home makes this place comforting. In the same way that I occasionally feel the desire to reach out to old highschool friends, I come here to see how everyone is doing and how the village has changed. A year ago when I visited, I was horrified how little activity there was. Seeing this thread only amplifies that feeling. I still have a strong emotional attachment to this home and even if it is nearly abandoned with weeds overtaking all but a few buildings of the town, it is still a space I know I can always return to.
