It's still a bit early to call it a goodbye IMHO...

Also, it's amazing what a facebook post can achieve...

Sup, guys! Wow, it's been a while. I'm feeling a flood of memories and feelings flood back in a thoroughly trippy way.

My inactivity was not due to a lack of interest or ill-will toward the site, but the usual perfect storm of work/school/significant others/hobbies/life that gets a lot of us away from our childhood interests.

A lot of my best memories and conversations have, funny enough, stemmed from this site. It's something we all like to joke about, but really, playing RuneScape and joining RuneVillage was one of the most influential decisions of my adolescence. From friends to fun to my first writing exercises (I now write music reviews semi-professionally), I've gained so much from this place. Hell, Jason (Gamestar) and I hung out in London two weeks ago.

I think it's time to let that go rather than let it ignominiously die.

As has been stated previously, the first death toll of RuneVillage was when hiker's past was discovered and reported to Jagex, thereby removing us of our gold fansite status (and correct me if I'm wrong - maybe we were silver?) and forcibly removing any association with RuneScape. We've always been a RuneScape fansite from the very beginning, way back in the RS Classic days, so removing that was the beginning of the end, and there was little way around it without a massive overhaul of the entire site.

However, we're too closely tied to RuneScape, so simply changing to another game was never in our cards, although MineCraft held substantial interest and activity for a while.

The saddest end for RuneVillage would be for it to fade out on its own. Ending it on our terms, through our decisions, and with our people can let us put it to rest in the way it deserves and in the way that won't cause us to feel guilty about it later. We've all been here - we know what's stored and posted within these Village walls. It would be a shame to lose that one day due to finances running to the end and then - that's it - it's gone, without so much as a proper goodbye. It is inevitable, as has been shown by previous attempts to jumpstart activity. I know I am not at a point in my life where I could devote time spent on RuneVillage. Many of us have grown into universities, graduation from universities, our first/second/third jobs, marriages, and even kids. Our former, truly active userbase that cares the deepest about this site has moved on to our next grand adventures.

And honestly, I think that's a good thing. RuneScape and RuneVillage were a lovely part of my past, and I'm happy to be here and give them one last goodbye. There are so many adventures out there that are waiting; leaving this one behind on my terms leaves me happy to see what the next adventure is going to be.

I would love if we could store this off-line somewhere, or at least have some snippets of posts and such that are important to us. Is the Archive still functioning, in that sense? Can we pull some of our old guides off of the main web site, or are there RuneScape guides stored somewhere that our community spent substantial time and effort into making together? The Legends Quest comes to mind (wow, talk about a nostalgia trip right there...).

Let's still be friends. Let's still talk on Facebook and Skype, where many of us are already active, and proudly put RuneVillage to rest in the manner it so graciously deserves.

See you on the other side, lovers and friends.

edit: holy hell, I was the 189,572nd person to get 30 Hunting?

Sorry brah! I didn't know you existed outside of the RV webs until that Facebook post killed the suspension of disbelief and now I have to refer to you as Phil for the rest of my life!

As much as I appreciate Kurt's enthusiasm for the preservation of our history, most of what we hold dear is either already permanently held in most of our minds (see: The Village Archive) or something we've not had much interest in to start with (see: failed RVET efforts, etc).

Most of what we have now in terms of activity could very easily be put into a single forum. Most of what we may access, edit, or still refer to in some events--location lists, compiled contact lists, game codes, game scores, etc--could very easily be saved into a couple files that are easily linked to. If Vent truly wants to hold onto something, those topics probably deserve the most attention. Runevillage itself, though? I don't know. I can't help but think of it in the same way I'd think of a school. You go there, it grows on you, you grow from being there, but when you outgrow it, it's fun to look back but almost impossible to commit to.

About 300 posts in a year? I'd expect that of a small social media group. Our interactions here? Far closer resemble a small social media group. If "Runevillage", or any deviation thereof, is to continue without forcing someone to pay a large amount for the novelty of having our own personal forum, it's as a small social media group. I would have zero objections to removing any ties to Runescape beyond "Hey, a few of our guys still play this" and such topics if we were to make a transition to being such a group on whatever media we keep using to stay together. If I'm not mistaken, this is already happening. As we've grown up and spent time here, we've found who our friends are, found ways to talk off the site, and grown into our own niche of playing what we want together, talking together, and checking here now and then for everyone else not already on our Skype/Yahoo/MSN/etc lists. I wouldn't call it a terrible loss to make an official transition onto another, less private media site to host ourselves in a group there as needed when the trends shift. I don't expect this kind of transition to save anything but a few bucks.

Runevillage the forum is pretty well much done. Runevillage the group will eventually die, but as long as we're still friends with each other in the end, it's still a pretty big thought in our heads. Runevillage the family is forever, no matter where we settle down. If absolutely nothing else ever comes of Runevillage in the future, that alone is a pretty damn awesome thought.

Didn't take time to read everything, but is the large cost for the forum alone or the site too, which are connected? Recognize a similar problem to another board i was a part of.

I don't think the point of this post is so much to do with costs, rather it's to do with activity. There's not much point keeping this small corner of the internet online if no-ones going to post on it.

Couldn't have said it any better myself.

I think most of us can also agree that, while we pretty much never visit the site anymore, it's still kind of sad to see it go. I still like reading some of the older Battlefields in the RP forum from time to time, as well as that Imagination RP Kikori made years ago (such a shame we never got to finish that!) when I feel like having a little nostalgia trip. Would be nice if we could save some of those topics somehow, but I'd understand if they're not very interesting for anyone that didn't actually participate.

So yeah, goodbye I guess?

It's too bad about that but i thought it seemed quite active when considering all boards. Maybe this thread will change the activeness a bit. It looks like it already has, which is good. Would hate to lose the site.

I agree with the majority of the posts here. There is no way this site should be left to continue. As mentioned, I have had some great memories from here, and have made great friends (ohai Dylan), but it is just too much now. I log in once or twice a month just to see how it's going, and there are rarely any new posts in the select forums that I look into. If you guys can't excite old members to come back how can you expect new ones to join?

You can try to rebuild, get new servers or look for free hosting, but it won't change a thing. People are not going to post. They are not going to join.

Just pour petrol on the electrical sockets and claim on the insurance.

(Also, hi.)

Eh, let's just migrate to 4chan and/or le raddit like everyone else.

And I thought I was going to make it to eleven years.

Honestly bros, it's not a bad idea.

It would be...

1) easier/cheaper than a standalone site;
2) janky than a Facebook page;
3) more popular and easier to get members, as so many freaking people use Reddit;
4) hip and with the kids;
5) without the pressure to create guides or whatnot;
6) easier to get existing members, as lots of us have Reddit accounts;
7) and a more streamlined, easier to way to keep track of posts/submissions/pictures/etc. than Facebook.

I'm all for r/runevillage. BUT, it cannot be viewed as a move. The RuneVillage, as we know it, is dead. (Long live RuneVillage.) If we just imagine we're moving everything over, it'll be too much recapture-the-past.

Fresh start on the reddits, I'm game.
