I personnally hate the flashchat and I would be willing to do anything I possibly can to have it replaced.

AJAX chat.

Back on topic, if its sticking with Java (which i presume it will at least for a Front end) i could help Though I imagine with Fant and Meep working on it, its not gonna need much / any help.

My only complaint with the old chat is that it was very plain. If it would be at all possible to pretty it up, I wouldn't mind creating background images for it. That's assuming that an ability to apply themes to the chat window would be possible.

And much like everyone else, I'd love to see features of the flash chat included into the java chat.

If I remember correctly, there were themes for the MeepChat, however, they were just colour schemes, as opposed to different images and whatnot.

If we are going to move to a Java Chat, I'd love to see a bigger chat screen, as opposed to the MeepChat screen which was rather small.

One of the things I wanted to do with a Java chat (client), was give it an option to have the chat in a separate window (like the way PMs used to pop up in meepster chat), it would be resizeable and you could have it always on top

It would definitely be possible

Even if the Server is C/C++

Well yeah, unless you want to make it AJAX (*shudder*) or keep it Flash, I think Java has the most possibilities

EDIT: Though of course, this really is up to fant, it's his project :P

If you use AJAX, it'll be impossible to have the server send messages to you without you requesting for them periodically - which would defeat the whole purpose of not using our current Flash chat.

Flash may have this ability built-in, but I'm not certain about it. I wouldn't be against it, but I think a Java chat has more possibilities.

Making the chat window stretchable seems doable to me. Prettying the chat up is also possible, but slightly more complicated if we're wanting to keep the themes system in place as well.

Greetings,
Glodenox

Could we not use an IRC room with a Java Front end ?

I mean permissions etc are already set up Tried and tested, we could use IRC bots that already exists or make our own, and then we could also connect with an IRC client

We could do something like NickServ on Freenode for logging in

Shoot, it's fan fire adept.

OT: I'd love the old chat back.

Quick bump to say this hasn't been abandoned or anything. I'm currently in finals week, and I'm planning to get some serious work done on this over the weekend.

Looking forward to helping where needed :)

I'll soon be having finals as well, but I think I can squeeze in some work for RV without taking risks.

Greetings,
Glodenox

Hey, I've got a pre-alpha server running up at:

http://vyhd.homelinux.org/code/RVChat/client/

Currently, it doesn't do login validation, so you can log in with any username and any password. Please test it out, let me know if you run into any problems, etc. - currently, room switching won't work, and mod commands obviously aren't available, but the rest should work.

Thanks!

That's because the emoticons are not yet available to the client.

The client is pretty much the same (although I'm hoping to make changes to it so it'll look a bit better and that it'll be stretchable in size). The server is completely new.

Greetings,
Glodenox

Looks the same

(Which is great, yes)

How did you end up designing the server? Also, did you have any plans of added functionality, or just restoring the old Chat, but in better order?
