May I suggest you read this book: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Gas_We_Pass
Dicussion of this book should be rather fun.

Seriously though, I would be interested to see if this takes off or not (summer's are a must better chance since people won't be in school).

I'd try to participate, but it would depend on the books chosen. Discussing The Gas We Pass doesn't really cut it (get it?) for me.

As I've read Moby **** and Frankenstein, and had AP discussion group thingies about them, they are fairly interesting reads if you can look a bit deeper into them. Heart of Darkness and Crime and Punishment were the harder books I read over the year.

No.

A reading list is better. It doesn't need a genre, free your mind!

If there needs to be an alternative to using the roleplay / literary society, why not a temporary usergroup? It's not hard to manage, but easy to keep track of and won't clutter what active stories and roleplays are up. (P.S. Tim thanks for dropping outta Earl's ;) )

As for the actual idea, picking a set genre is a bad idea. However, listing what genres each user is comfortable reading (note: not what you normally or prefer, what you're comfortable enough reading to stand getting through the book) would help with sorting out who can get what books and not wind up disappointed.

Unless gas prices shoot to $4.25 a gallon, there should be little trouble getting your parents to take you to the library or book store for the books chosen.
User: Hey, mom? I have a favor to ask.
Mom: What is it?
User: Take me to the library...? Please?
Mom: *Keels over from heart attack at being asked to go there* Of course!

The last thing I see there may be to work out is the idea of compiling books and how to match people to books. This is where picking people to genres may actually be a GOOD thing. Each genre can have a number, and you can use a random number generator to match that person with a random genre. If you somehow match a person with a genre they specified they did NOT want, roll again as necessary. This matches people with a list of books that they can choose from to be comfortable reading about.
If you want to further the random rolling option to match each user with a specific book in the genre, be my guest, but I think the only restriction on users picking the books is if they pick one for how short it is or if they've already read it.

Does that sound like it'd work out for this idea? ;)

Regardless, count me in. I enjoy reading enough to consider this :D

Kikori, after the book list is brought forth, it will have a ride variety of genres in it, assuming everybody is a bit different. The books that are most voted for will be hit first, and so no matter what genre is picked, that's the one that people liked the most.

Beside that, the reason I brought up the idea was for the expansion of horizons, not for people to dig back into the cave they're comfortable with. If you find that you genuinely don't like the book, nobody is stopping you from returning it to the library early.

As for a usergroup, I don't see the point. Open to all discussion, open to all users. Why limit it?

Anyway, everybody seems pretty up for the idea, but it's May 2nd already. We should get our booklist rolling to be ready for the end of May/beginning of June.

I suppose a lot of people said they would want to join in, but not coordinate it. If nobody steps up, I'll gladly do it, but I wouldn't mind a bit of help either.

What I was trying to get accross is users pointing out which genres they're uncomfortable reading. I may have worded it stupidly in my first post, and sorry for that. :P

If you need assistance, I for one would be prepared to help. But what exactly do you want us to do? Your original idea of having everybody select one book, and then a general vote sounds good. All we need is one topic for determining the book list.

Sounds good to me, I need to do something constructive anyways. However, I'll be occupied this entire month until like mid June which is when I have my final exams.

If I may make a suggestion, I recently read Removed for becoming the suggestion, which is a book that's relatively short, highly symbolic, and just plain funny. I'm not necessarily stating that's the absolute best book to pick and you must choose it, but it's a book that I think would appeal to most audiences on Runevillage. However, I must warn that if you do pick it, there are minor references to prostitution and drug use in it, though they never explicitly state it.

Sorry, for the sake of no-one looking back and playing a game of bias due to you recommending this book, I removed the title.

Hehe, I thought it was pretty explicit :)

As for the usergroup thing, could it be a temporary open usergroup? I'd imagine that would work, but I have no clue.

I'd be interested in doing this also! Although most of the books I'd recommend aren't exactly family friendly ^_^;

Bah, don't make me laugh. You can't even read RV topics and responses that has more than 5 sentences so how do you think you could finish reading a whole book? ._.

As the book is selected from a genre that is voted by the users who participates this, it might cause some users to not want to participate at all if the books are from genre that the user feels very uncomfortable to read. It's the same thing as trying to force someone who doesn't like anime at all to watch anime shows. Or someone who can't stand horror movies to watch those.

I would guess that fantasy books will be the favourite genre chosen by Villagers so I might actually look into this thing if it happens and participate if I see a book that interests me. Though, I must warn you, I don't have that much time to read during summer so I might not be able to read a book in a week or so :/

Nobody is forcing anybody to read a book. It's just a way to open up doors for people who wish to try walking through them. If everybody who does this are only going to read the books they're comfortable with, then there's no point to doing this at all anyway.

Call me a litterary snob, but regardless of whether you like a certain kind of book or not, you should have the sensibility and courtesy to read a book the whole way through, keeping an open mind about it and being able to give your honest opinion of it, and most importantly, being able to tell other people WHY you did or didn't like a book.

"It sucks," tells us nothing. "I didn't enjoy it because..." is far more preffered.

As far as how family friendly the books are... I don't care how family friendly a book is. All of us (even those who are in the lower grades of highschool) should have the mind to understand that it is merely literature. There is a saying that those who do not know war, do not know peace either. At the very least, they don't appreciate the peace they enjoy to the extend that someone with the knowledge of war does. In terms of telling a story, even one where the writer is trying to encourage good morals, free thinking, peace, and all that's fuzzy and warm, you still need to show the negative. You need something to compare it to, something to give the good weight in the mind. The book I'm reading right now would activate RV's filter so many times that the jumping bunnies would lag a computer any less than cutting edge. Does that mean that the book, the author, and the message taken from the book is a bad one? Absolutely not.

Generally, there is no limit to the moral rating of the book. If it has a bad moral rating, then it'll be a good thing to discuss.
