Does he think people getting refunds mean he's being scammed or is he referring to something completely different?

If so, then that's a ridiculous way of thinking. The donation money is RV's and it is to be used only for RV.

I think I'll set up a PayPal account and manage the donations from now on. Hope you're all okay with that.

Someone should actually talk to Henner and find out what he means/what's going on, instead of thinking that's an acceptable explanation and forgetting about it. This guy agreed to be in charge, so regardless of whether or not he wants to wash his hands of this place, he owes you an explanation at least, not to mention the money that doesn't belong to him.

tru

He has our money, and he needs to tell us what is going on - He should at least go online and tell us that he is leaving RV or something, this absence is strange!

Also I vote no for a name change, Runevillage is our soul, if you change the name people wont know who we are anymore and I will lose my sense of belonging :-)

This. If we can just get the damn donations in so the site doesn't go down, I'll be happy. We can work on our identity crisis later.

Site is paid up for the quarter. No worries. Carry on with the identity crisis.

Speaking from prior experience, I wouldn't hold your breath. He removed his own rank without telling anyone on the site, and the picture Jackstick posted clearly says Henner has no intention of returning.

So let's just...drop him, and move on. He's made it clear that he's going to drop us, so we really don't need to be worrying about it. Burks is right that we're paid up for the quarter, so no hassles there anymore, either.

Jackstick, you know that everyone would be fine with you managing money. :P You're like the most trustworthy guy of us all! Let me know when things are set up and I'll re-donate to where you can reach it this time.

Are you really just going to forget it and pretend nothing ever happened? You can't just go sweeping things under the rug, you are all owed an explanation, and it's the responsibility of the people who have his contact information to get that explanation. Even if you manage to get your money back it's an unacceptable way to behave, and quite frankly the way you're trying to deal with it is infuriating.

If it was my money on the line, or if I still regularly visited this site, I would be contacting him myself and demanding to know what the hell is going on. You're really going to get that one email and not pursue it any further? Either there's more to it that you're not letting on, or you're being overly forgiving.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but changing the name is unlikely to bring in a influx of members. Becoming a general gaming site just introduces way more competition. Let's be honest, if it's a choice between a gaming site with really active forums, thousands of users who play a plethora of games, or one with inactive forums and less than 100 active users, regardless of the other flaws, which would you pick? Runevillage did well in the day because it was a niche market, there wasn't many Runescape fansites to pick from. There's literally thousands of gaming sites out there, I just don't think it's viable.

That said, I don't think everyone should suddenly forget RV and go elsewhere, it serves excellently as a way of old friends staying in touch. I love coming here and seeing how everyone's doing, but if I'm honest, it really don't think it ever will be anything more than that.

tru

Oh please do not get me wrong. I'm not suggesting we "forget it and pretend nothing ever happened", much the opposite. I think we should all remember what's going on here and let it serve as a reminder in the future. But this is also what I know:

  • Months ago, Henner unbanned a permanently banned user and didn't tell anyone about it, including all of the other administrators. Many of us asked for an explanation. When we didn't get it we demanded an explanation. Weeks went by, not without lack of activity. We never got one. Henner wasn't "not reading" the topic, he was actively ignoring us. Eventually he posted some vague crap that still wasn't an answer nor an explanation, but it was pretty darn clear that he didn't think he owed us anything, and wasn't going to waste his time on us. This wasn't the first time he acted that way, either.
  • Fast-forward to now, and all of this stuff going on. Henner has my $120 for over a month, while RV would have been shut down if not for Burks's ability to go to the server host directly. This global exists. Hiker continually tried to contact Henner. Jackstick continually tried to contact him. Goten continually tried to contact him. And those are only the ones I personally know of. A month and a half later, Henner says this: "Most of the comments were from hiker...so I am done with RuneVillage...not going on RuneVillage anymore." Was this a spur of the moment decision? Heck no. He removed his own rank weeks ago! Did he tell anyone then, maybe post that he, the owner of the site, was leaving? Nope.
  • I got my $120 back and can redonate it to RV. I don't know who else donated, but I think if any of them attempt to get their money back, they'll have an easy time of doing it as long as they do it now (within PayPal's 45-day limit.) The Donate page was shut down so the money is not going to Henner anymore.

In conclusion, I 100% agree with you: we are all owed an explanation.

But from lots, and lots, of past experience: we are not going to get one.

So my opinion is we just move on.

I tried too. The last thing he ever replied to me with was 'die' in a text.

Anyway. The bigger task now is getting the domain transferred to Jackstick.

"Die" has always been one of Henner's favourite ways to communicate, and as such it became popular on Runevillage to use it.

I remember a few years ago saying it to a few people outside of Runevillage and they thought I actually wanted them to die...
