What is this suppose to be actually?

I assume it's the legend for the labeling of the messages (which are labelled with different brightnesses of green)

Yes, the darkness of the square defines the type of message.

- Light green squares represent a message that you've replied to.
- Dark green squares represent a message from a friend.
- Orange squares represent messages marked as important.

I'm not certain what a message from a 'foe' would look like. If I were to guess it would be red.

I think what he's saying is, the legend doesn't not show any of the appropriate colors. :-s
