Ok, so I just had a look at hikers thread asking for donations and had an idea...


You would pay say... $5 or £2.50 a month and have your account upgraded to a gold account. You would have acess to an extra forum and maybe get sent a free gift from the store or something, providing you signe dup for a year. You would have an extra icon under your name which is like a gold badge which says gold member on it. If somebody got this set up surely it would help money issues slightly?

What does everybody think?

I don't support giving donators extra benefits. We did use to have donor ranks under our avatars, but we lost them when we moved to PBP 3. We're meant to be getting them back at some stage...

I don't really agree with it either. I happily gave a donation this time around and I don't need any kind of special treatment for it. I gave the donation to help out the site and not to gain benefits

Anyway, I don't think donors should be given free stuff from the store... People should donate because they want to help RV. I think a donor image is enough.

It isnt a "Donate and get free stuff idea". It's an option to upgrade your account. If people wanted to become a gold member they would be doing so they could get acess to the extra forum and to become part of the special group. It's not just a way to encourage donations. They money could be used anywhere.

That sounds a lot like the legends rank. They get a rank for being a outstanding villagers, as well as a private forum. I prefer giving benefits to people because of who they are rather than how much money they have. Yes, donors should recieve some kind of thanks for their care. The donor rank is good enough


However, the donor rank is not used right now because of our move to phpbb3...

Donate to the site.. which doesn't have a lot of money... And you get something FREE from the site shop?

Isn't that kinda contradicting? Eventually Hiker would be losing money instead of getting a decent net profit. =/

Getting free stuff for donating is like saying your only donating to get free stuff, NOT to give money to the site.

Good idea. Make them special. Give them an @runevillage.com e-mail maybe? Access to a donor's forum and stuff. A cool image, title and rank would help also. I've seen it done before, it works well.

You would only get some freebies if you signed up for a year though, so the money going out would be nothing compared to whats going in.

I think an extra forum would be nice, no rank or anything, just access to a forum, bit of apprieciation with no cost to the site, a lot of other sites do that.

As many forums that are available for spam already, theres no need for another forum. It would just be a place to post "Hey I gave money to Hiker, lets scoff at those who didn't " Needs more of a reward for the money. Perhaps custom titles, rank + cool image and stuff. It'd be a nice reward, but that a lone is not enough incentive.

Anyways, on topic. I don't like the idea of Gold Membership. I can't really point my finger on the exact point where it looks wrong in my eyes, but .. it does. However, I do think that the donor icon mod should be put back relatively fast. Not really to make the donaters stand out from the rest, but rather to give them recognition. I don't support the idea of an extra forum, though. The only point of discussion would be "and how much did you donate already?"

Also, when Gold Membership gets put in, it might get set for something like $5 a month, or so. Now if the amount of people that do now donate on a monthly base, all go back to $5, that might cut down on the income as well. Now, maybe more people would be subscribing, but I think that the monthly income would be less then it would be now.

An other point against it, is that if it gets incorporated, people would find .. creative ways of paying as well. Possibly even creating situations in which they are using their parent's credit card without them allowing, because it gives you a certain status on RV (like buying the Legend rank, an other point against..). This has happened before and caused quite some trouble on Hiker's side, as I recall.
