Well I have been thinking.... I know it's scary.... But, how many people out there are new to this type of website, i.e the forum... This type of person may be put off joining but the numeroius posts and buttons that do things like put it in bold etc... After all we are a PG site are we not which means younger children may join and we can't expect them to know HTML, can we? So what I am proposing is a well advistised thread with screenshots which tells them everything they need to know. From how to post, to where, to how to get the most from the enjoyable expereience that is Runevillage. I feel that this will not only bring a new lease of life to Runevillage but bring in the chance on new friendships for us all. If this idea proves popular I will volunteer to run it and keep it up to date. However I will also need someone to check and edit my post as you can probabally tell I am not the best speller. 8)

I think it is a pretty good idea. If anything, it will only make new members more confident.
I'll be willing to help you out with it, if you'd like :D

So, to summarize, you would like somebody to create a manual on how to use the forums written at an easy-to-understand level?

First I'm going to move this to Hiker's Campfire seeing this isn't about information on the main site, or is it? We can also make such a guide over there, but I don't really think that's needed as the forum can provide us with all the tools we need to make such a manual.

Seems like a good idea to me :)

Joking  Nah, i reckon it's a good idea, If your willing to make a guide of course...

Runevillage the forum is pretty well much done. Runevillage the group will eventually die, but as long as we're still friends with each other in the end, it's still a pretty big thought in our heads. Runevillage the family is forever, no matter where we settle down. If absolutely nothing else ever comes of Runevillage in the future, that alone is a pretty damn awesome thought.

We actually have a basic "Welcome to RV" topic in Lumbridge Lounge, but it's very out-of-date. So this is a great idea.

I'll just make a few suggestions of what I think it should include:

  • Explanation of how to log in
  • Explanation of the "post reply" screen - all the buttons, how to add smilies etc (including their codes for shorthand use), polls, attachments
  • Demonstrate what all the features of the actual visible end post do and mean
  • Explanation of how PMs work
  • Explanation of search feature (inc. handy search bar at bottom of page)
  • Explanation of User Control Panel - overview, profile, PMs (already covered in above section), board preferences, usergroups (to be covered in a separate sticky) and friends & foes
  • Link to the Forum Rules - brief summary of some of the key things to avoid (like profile use, flaming, spamming)
  • Show the Forum Index and explain: "view unanswered posts", "view active topics", "view new posts", "view your posts", "delete all board cookies", "the team", "who is online", show how if you click on a category it will bring up all the forums in the category
  • Give a brief outline of what all the numbers and letters by a forum in the index mean
  • Explain globals, announcements, stickies (and other topic types shown at the bottom of the forum)
  • Provide a link to a to be created Chat Guide

Hopefully we can create an idiot-proof beginners guide to RV.

That'd be brilliant. :D

One thing I forgot to mention is that I think that having as many pictures as possible would be good as well.
