The Wilderness or "Wildy" is mostly used for the purpose of Pking, clan warfare, and mining those two precious rune rocks. But the Wilderness can also be a good place to train some skills, combat and non-combat alike. This guide is mainly for P2P purposes, but some content pertains to F2P characters as well.
This guide will talk about some of the more popular skills to train in the wilderness, and the necessary precautions to take in order to stay alive and away from Pkers.
I.Q's and A's.Q.Why would anybody risk training in the Wilderness?
A.The "danger level" in the Wilderness in very high, because of this, many places that are fairly good for training are usually empty and for the taking.
Q.What are the risks of training in the Wilderness?
A.There are a two major ones:
-Player Killers, because the Wilderness is made for PvP combat, you are in danger of being attacked. This could result in you losing almost if not all your stuff, and disruption of your training.
-Death by monster. Obviously this could happen anywhere...but if you are training in a place close to town, you could always run back for food, and if you die, you have a chance of making it back to the spot where your items dropped before they disappear. But in the Wilderness, there are no banks, and it is far away from Lumbridge/Falador, so you can't get to your stuff in time (that is if it isn't already taken).
Q.What skills could possibly be trained in the Wilderness?
A.See sections "II".
II.Skills that could be trained in the Wilderness?Technically, more then half the skills in RuneScape can be trained in the Wilderness. This section will only explain those that it makes sense to train.
A)Combat (Attack,Strength,Defense,Magic,Range)There are many deadly creatures in the Wilderness, what many people don't realize is some of them make good training targets.
Monsters that are good for combat leveling:
-Moss Giants
-Lesser Demons
-Greater Demons
-Hell Hounds
-Fire Giants
-Hill Giants
-Skeletons
-Green Dragons (More for profit purposes though)
-Pirates
-Red Spiders
Every creature on this list appears in groups, making it easy to train more efficiently, thus making you level-up faster. They are also located in a certain region of the wilderness making them easy to locate.
Tips for keeping safe:-Hop from world to world until you find an empty world. Empty in terms of the Wilderness, some worlds with few people may have many in the Wilderness, and vice versa.
-Try to stay away from "training buddies", these are people you see training in the same area you are. Most of the time they are friendly, but once in a while you'll stumble upon somebody who waits for you to run out of food and
BAM! attacks you. Even if that isn't the case...the more people, the less monsters for you.
-Always keep one eye on the mini map. If you see a white dot, then it's usually best to log off for a minute, or better yet world hop.
-Keep your equipment cheap but effective. There is never a need to train in full dragon and a whip in the wilderness. A member will find that a Berserker Helm and an Abyssal Whip, combined with rune plate body and legs will almost always do the trick for even strong monsters such as demons.
-Replace some equipment with other. If your a real "defense buff", then wear Torags armor...some of the best defense in the game, and for under 1.5 million, less then, say, Dragon Plate legs.
-Bring lobsters or monk fish. Both these foods are readily available and good for training, no need to waste money on things like Sharks.
-Check on you "Items kept at death" section before you go off. Make sure you understand what you will lose if you die.
-For Mages and Rangers, I find it best to take enough arrows and/or runes for around an hour. This way you can bank your drops, and at the same time, not risk losing too many runes.
B)Agility (Wilderness Course in 50+ Wilderness)This may very well be one of the best ways to train Agility. Many people spend hours upon hours training here. This course can also be one of the most dangerous places in the wilderness, because there is little place to run.
Tips for keeping safe:-Wear ONLY a weapon and boots on lightness. The weapon should be a poisoned dagger (preferably something like a Dragon Dagger with Super Poison). This keeps some would-be attacks away because they see that you don't have much, and that you could seriously harm them.
-Bring one full (4 dose) Anti-Poison potion. This is just in case someone attacks you and then you get poisoned.
-Use cakes. These little gems heal as much as a lobster, and you can eat them in 3 portions (4 HP each). Cakes are the best thing you can use to train agility in my opinion.
-If you are going to Log out in the course, log out between the Stone Steps and the Slippery Log. This way, when you log in you can see the surrounding area, and have a good means of escape/time to log out if you see someone approach.
-Always keep one eye on the mini map. If you see a white dot, then it's usually best to log off for a minute, or better yet world hop.
-Unlike combat training, I always find it best to have a "training buddy" for this. Going around the course for more then a small while can get boring and frustrating. Having someone to converse with can be a relief. Because you only have one weapon and your boots with you, theres nothing to be lost (except a bunch of cakes).
-Get here by using the lever in Ardougne City.
C)Fletching (Levels 1-10)Strange huh? Wouldn't expect to see this here. From Levels 1 though 10 of Fletching, you are pretty much stuck making arrow shafts. This is done by cutting a regular tree log. But since regular trees only have one log on them, it can be annoying to go from tree to tree. In 14-18 wilderness, there are patches on very dense regular (dead trees), these are closer together then any other regular trees in the game.
Tips for keeping safe:-Bring only an Axe and a Knife. No food whatsoever. You want to fill your entire inventory with logs. It is unlikely people will attack you, it's pretty noticeable that someone is just cutting logs.
-Go in a "circle" or "Figure 8" pattern. This way, when you get back to a tree, it will have grown back already.
-This should take around 30 minutes to an hour so you won't be training here long.
-Bring teleport runes or a ring/amulet/bracelet of something to teleport away with. Don't wear it though, it attracts unwanted attention.
-Always keep one eye on the mini map. If you see a white dot, then it's usually best to log off for a minute, or better yet world hop.
-This takes little time so I don't believe there is need for a "training buddy".
D)ThievingRogues in the 50+ wilderness have a splendor of goodies for you to pickpocket off of them. They give decent experience. Nothing too great, but still worth noting. These guys can give lockpicks.
Tips for keeping safe:-Wear nothing but a poisoned dagger. This is only needed for the occasional Pker, that decides to attack you. It might ward some off, but if they want to fight, you have a chance to poison them and do some real harm.
-Fill around half your inventory with cakes. If you fail to pickpocket, the Rogues will backlash with a few damage and stun you. Eat a cake when get hit a few times.
-Keep your health up. If a Pker comes around and you have nearly no health, just say Good-Bye. You won't lose too much, but death in itself isn't fun, and you'll drop everything you were pickpocketing.
-Always keep one eye on the mini map. If you see a white dot, then it's usually best to log off for a minute, or better yet world hop.
-"Training Buddies" are great in this situation. You could be training for a while, and some friendly company is always welcome. Since you don't have much in the way of anything, it is rare that someone will attack you after being there for a while.
E)Hunter (Black salamander)The Black Salamander is located in level 20 Wilderness, and requires level 67 hunter. It isn't really a good idea for training. But I decided it was worth the mentioning.
Tips for keeping safe:-Only bring the net and teleport runes. You don't need food, and you don't need a weapon. If you see someone aggressive coming, just run to level 19 and under Wilderness and teleport away.
-Always keep one eye on the mini map. If you see a white dot, then it's usually best to log off for a minute, or better yet world hop.
-"Training buddies" are a blessing here. This could get boring so a person to have a chat with is great.
-This is one of the less dangerous ways to train. Mainly because you can easily run to a place to teleport away. Just make sure you still take caution. Remember that you're not wearing armor so you aren't as resistant to damage as you usually are.
F)Mining (Coal and Iron mainly)There are a group of Coal Rocks near the Skeleton mine in the early Wilderness.
Tips for keeping safe:-You'll almost always have other people mining with you, because people realize this isn't a bad place to mine. It's usually okay because other miners just go about their mining. Obviously.
-Only wear a pick and that's it, no more and no less. You can always run out or teleport if need be.
-Bring teleport runes if you think you're going to have to escape Pker attacks.
-Be careful where you click. If people are near each other, it is very easy to click another player by accident. This is why you have to make sure the mouse is over the rocks when you click.
-Always keep one eye on the mini map. If you see a white dot, then it's usually best to log off for a minute, or better yet world hop. I mean a dot in the distance, not one of your fellow miners.
III.Other random things worth Mentioning.-Play when you aren't tired, and when you are fully awake. If you are drowsy, you won't have such a good reaction time and understanding of whats going on. This is an easy way to make a mistake and get killed.
-Remember this is the wilderness. Many people often overestimate themselves. Then they become depressed when a Pker cam along and slaughtered them.
-Remember then the higher up you go, the greater the level difference can be. If you train in level 50+ Wilderness, people who are 50 levels higher then you can come and hit you. Believe me when I say thats one hell of a difference. For example, in level 50 Wilderness, a player with 74 combat can be attacked by someone with 124 combat...and I can assure you they won't get away.
-Show some respect. If someone kills you in the Wilderness, don't spam their private chat and follow them around everywhere. It is the Wilderness and that person attacking you was allowed.
