That's a tablet. They're designed for loading full web pages. Phones aren't.

after further thought I wouldn't mind after RuneVillage went mobile if it had an app that was even as simple as hitting the menu button and it listing guides, forum, and database.

Really simple and easy to put together and would probably get us new users that were looking for guides on their phone.

I'd prefer a mobile website over an app because everyone can browse that mobile site, whereas apps only work on the OS they're designed for

This doesn't mean we shouldn't have an RV app, but a mobile site should have a higher priority

If an app is created, I'm sure the mobile site will go hand in hand with it. And yes, considering not everyone has a smart phone, some people can still browse web pages on their phones. For that reason, a mobile site is certainly a high priority as well if something like this were to be created. But the sound of an RV app popping up on my Droid, all organized and easy to use like the FB app would be supurb!

Pretty sure the time you spend convincing us that we need an app so badly would be better spent actually making the app.

I'd be quite content with just a mobile version of the forums personally.

to be honest, runevillage is good enough on my ipad. so a mobile site would be good.

No database editing would be needed whatsoever :?: Also, I don't think that was directed at you personally..

Now, I've done some hunting around, and this is quite interesting. They've managed to convert a style for mobile use. I'm sure with a little tinkering, just re-using this should work fine (bar for any plugins RV uses..?).
Perhaps some links would have to be hardcoded out (chat, for example), but it can certainly be done.
I know some people on here must be great with phpBB3 - after all, you guys converted the old theme from phpBB2 to phpBB3, right? :^_^:

I'd be happy to help out if I could. 8)

That mobile skin would indeed be a good option. There are a couple of things that I'd change around due to our plugins, but I think the changes would be minimal. It would also allow us to make a skin that doesn't have too many heavy images - which helps to keep the download size down a bit.

Greetings,
Glodenox

@magic/knight ---

let's move forward with this....

why don't you two guys get together, contact Henner (who's already been looking into this) and see what you can come up with...

basically, it would be good if you two made a team, reporting to Henner, with technical support from Glode... (Glode has a good bit of responibility as it is, and I don't want to overload him-- he can decide how active he can or wants to be in this project-- but Henner is used to working with Glode on technical issues- in the end, Glode will be the one to sign off on the technical aspects of this)

while it would, out of design and necessity, have to run from the same database, I'm still thinking that a new 'style' (stylesheet) is the solution... and that's basically what you linked to above...

other than that, we'd also need to see what's required to access the data from another domain, so that we can put this on 'mobi' ... info on doing this can be found on the phpbb forum...

we also have a 'test' forum and database that can be used to set this up, and henner/glode can upload files for you for testing purposes....

thanks guys!

If there's anything I can do to help out as well, let me know. I'd like to have a little part in this as well, but I have no tech experience.

Some quick notes: the template above would be a good starting point on how we can lay out the several parts of the forum. The same sort of thing could be applied for the main page.

Very often, we're using images to display information (such as the ranks, donor ranks, ...). Those details can be transformed into text, and certain buttons can be made using borders instead of images (perhaps slightly bigger buttons than usual for touch devices).

There is still one update of the forum that I'm currently working on, which I'd prefer to release first before work continues on that new template. Or you have to base your work on the new code. At that point it doesn't affect that update any more. Looking over the changes in the code, I don't think there's anything that wouldn't work with the new template code anyway.

Greetings,
Glodenox

Sounds good.

As for the .mobi domain, just point it to the normal forums. Add a check using the media tag; if the screen width is less than 500px (for example), switch to the mobile stylesheet. Mmmm, except if you make your browser window small, it'll switch to the mobile site :-|

I'm guessing the most difficult bits will be the User Control Panel and things like that - where's there's a lot of content in a small space. Otherwise we're just looking at a variable-width stylesheet.

What do you say, MagicShmop07? :smooth:

Seems I'll hopefully be getting a Droid phone this week for my birthday (or a Blackberry, but I'd rather not o.O) so this would be perfect!

For Android users, chat would work on the app :]
