The huge size of the log.txt file was indeed the problem. I removed it and all of a sudden chat restarted :?

It was all due to one old PHP function named "split" which splits up text based on certain characters, but is no longer encouraged to be used. Because the code used that, an error got logged pretty much each time something was requested from the database. Result: a humongous huge log file...

I've now replaced that function with the much more recent "explode" function (yes, it really is called like that and no, it will not explode the chat) and am not seeing any more logs being added.
