Found this the other night when looking up nerdy games that don't require rulebooks. Apparently it works for forum games!

The rules are pretty straightforward. Everyone is an 18th century noble, and we're all telling stories that glorify ourselves. Whoever adlibs the best story given the perameters wins. Players CAN however interject to make storytelling harder on whoever is telling it.

A typical game will begin with an individual saying to the storyteller "Tell us about that time you did x with y with z", and the storyteller responding with "Of course!". They then tell their story leading up to whatever it is they do. If someone interjects, they say "But wait! What about this?", or "I thought this happened?" If the interjection is calling bs on something, then the storyteller must explain themself. If the interjection is an alternate version of events or an added thing, then the storyteller has to run with it or integrate it into the story. Players vote on the best story at the end of the game.

I'm TOLD this makes a good forum game, but I don't necessarily know what rules change. We would have to set some ground rules. In the actual game, stories are 5 minutes long, and a token of some sort is passed between players when they interject (the version I played had consequences for an unsuccessful interjection). Perhaps people would post a story in five parts, one per day, with the opportunity for interjections in between?

Sounds interesting. Though, it sounds like it'd be more suitable for the vent server.

Chat might even work well for it. Not like we play mafia in there anymore.

I just see it being hard to interrupt someone when it's text-based. :P

Well also it depends when the posts are. If once a day one person has to tell the story with, let's say, 3 interruptions, then that person will have to be on all day. If it's over a period of a week, then no one else would have a turn for a long time.

Regardless, I'm in. I've gotten pretty active lately, so I guess would be a good time to start a forum game where I wouldn't get kicked out of.

Ahh, those were the good old days. When we would spam-PM one another until everyone gathered in the chat for a game of chat mafia. Alas.

Anyway, I'd like to try something like this if we could figure out a way to do it in a timely manner.

I'm envisioning this as more of an ongoing writing competition at this point.

Signing up means you are volunteering to write, and we come up with a turn order based on it. You don't have to be signed up to interject; anyone can do that. You can drop out of the sign ups at anytime, so there's no obligation to play. After all the turns have gone by, we allow for drop in players; anyone who didn't sign up, but through their heckling have decided that they want to write. Then we vote on the winner through a poll.

A turn, however, IS a three day obligation. Once per day (after given your initial prompt from the previous player) you write a single paragraph. I'm thinking 100 words for the sake of the interjections, and to make it easier to sum up on the front page of the thread. Interjections can come in for 24 hours, but there MUST be between 24 and 30 36 hours. Then you respond to each, and continue your story within the next hour of the response, so that there's still the pressure that's in the traditional game. Any time gaps found in posting time will have an asterisk placed on their section of the front page, as will any failed responses to interjections.

Any other suggestions, or problems with these rules?

Skype, Chat, etc.

We don't necessarily have to force speech on the players, but having a realtime program of some kind helping us play even shorter games or demonstration games would be a good touch on this game. We don't necessarily have to limit it to just one game on the forums, documentation of what we've created can be kept here.

Agreed with kik. Test running the game in chat or something would be great before starting it here, I think. Or, as was mentioned, do it simultaneously.

Central that's 6 PM (though that's 2.5 hours ago so I'm sure it's no longer relevant...)
