This was a decent movie up until the horse scene. That was completely unnecessary, and there could have easily been a better ending thought up to than using animal cruelty as a way to appeal to the emotional side of the audience. It just seemed like a cheap way to get a tear out of people, even if it was CGI. My girlfriend didn't even care about the fact that Maggie was bit by a snake. She started crying because of what was being done to the horse. My friend's girlfriend, who shoes horses for a living, also started crying because of it. Other than that the movie was great. Too much talking and not enough action, though.
How did this get a PG-13 rating? That's what I was wondering. I live in Fort Smith, Arkansas, so it was fun hearing all the towns and whatnot mentioned.

Prolly be a cool movie for our time and will prolly go over pretty well considering a lot of the people going to see this most likely havn't seen the original.
I just dunno though. What hiker said. That's my favorite movie scene period lol.
And the best part is, it will encourage people to see the original.
Pretty sure True Grit is a book so it's closer to the multiple filmings of The Great Gatsby (apparently another version with DiCaprio is on the cards) than, say, the remake of Psycho. Obviously it'll be difficult to top Wayne's performance, but the Coens film should offer distinct pleasures of its own. They seem to have the feel for doing period pieces and I'd much rather a traditional Western than an ironic pastiche.

I've seen a still of that scene from the new movie, and it just doesn't have the magic...
And i like Jeff Bridges... one of my favorites, and even though i've never seen any of the Cohens' movies, i understand they're quite good at their craft... but .. this is like going to the Sistine Chapel and saying... "well... we can touch up the ceiling a bit... update it... make it more like the book."

Thoughts? I for one am happy to see Josh Brolin costarring, particularly after his role in No Country. Seems like the Coens are working with regulars on this one, so the performances can only benefit.
