Your point? They could have replaced the drummer with someone else, as they've done on their reunions, and tried to continue making music, but they didn't - perhaps as respect to the drummer, but it paid off. To prove my point even more, look at the line-up changes Metallica had, and since they kept trying, look at how stale they've become.

but i do agree that this is a brilliant album. Took me a while to get used to it, but they definately haven't disappointed. The day that never comes and all nightmare long are standouts, but the whole album is sick! there's new style mixed with the old that I love! I give it a good 8/10 ay

It's because they hadn't outstayed their welcome. Face it, bands get stale after a while. Those who don't stop, their old stuff is almost always considered better than their new stuff. Metallica - the obvious example here. After Black Album, they got pretty horrible.
The only exceptions I can think of to my "get out while you're on top" argument is the Red Hot Chili Peppers and AC/DC. RHCP's stuff is just as good as their 80s/90s music, although that's just my opinion, of course. AC/DC, I haven't heard too much of their new stuff (they have a new album coming out in October for the first time in eight years), but I haven't heard bad stuff about their new music.

Sounds a lot like the Black Album to me, which in my opinion was still great Metallica. For all those who say Metallica sold out after the late 80s, it's no surprise you'd say it's no good. But for those who liked the Black Album and beyond, this is a real work of art.
