I have to be honest, a bunch of my friends complain about iTunes doing the same to them, and I have seen this happen many times. But I have never understood why. As Jack mentioned, iTunes simply opens the location where the file is located and plays it. Which is often why it will lag from time-to-time, especially if the file is located down multiple folder paths.

But I have to be honest, I have never had an issue with iTunes myself, or an Apple product. I have all my music on an external hard-drive that is connected to our network. iTunes seems to love this - and we have *never* had an issue with missing music. iTunes is good if you treat it as a music player. Genius is a waste of time, for me personally anyway. Ping is great for those that use it. Turn these unwanted features off, they only create lag and problems within iTunes itself.

You can also minimise iTunes to a little player on your Start Bar, which to memory reduces the power it drains from your PC.

All of that said, VLC is quality for Movies, but have never used it for Audio..

..I can only recommend Spotify, but its library is limited within certain genres, and to listen without advertisements, and offline requires a subscription. Its good if you use your smartphone or tablet to listen to music everyday - as you can download the App and register it, and your good to go. We7 is also good, but then you have no control over what you listen to - it is free however.

Goodluck finding a decent alternative.. :^_^:

Windows Media Player 12 dropped at least three of the things I found critical and I miss them horribly. I still use it because I prefer it to Winamp, but if I had the chance to safely downgrade to 11 I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Windows Media Player tended to get slower in certain actions once I got to about 5000 tracks, where this one still runs very smoothly at that point. Also, I find it very handy that it can generate the song titles and extract other information from the file name when I provide it with the structure of the file names, as I often want to add tracks that don't have proper meta-data set (such as in-game music).

Yup, I use windows media player myself. Though Winamp is also pretty cool, media player is just more convenient.

I use a Philips GoGear Vibe Mp3 player. It's 30 bucks (was?) for 4 gigs of space and honestly, the thing hasn't let me down.

Anyway, I gave up iTunes and iPods for a different reason: I prefer to use .flac files instead of .mp3, because they're much higher quality. But Apple products don't play .flac - they insist on using .alac, Apple's proprietary codec. It's equal in quality to .flac, but I'd have to convert my .flac files to .alac and I just don't feel like doing that every time I find new music!

So now I use Winamp and a Sansa Clip Zip. Both are easy to use, and they give me exactly what I need without any extra bullshit like Genuis or Coverflow. The Sansa Clip Zip may not look like much when compared to an iPod - it's made of plastic, has a tiny screen, and the menus aren't designed as cleanly as Apple's, but it's much less expensive, and it really packs a punch for its size.

I bought my mom a Sony E Series Walkman. It doesn't support .flac, but it's very solidly built and easy to use, and it can be synced with Winamp. And it's much cheaper than a comparable iPod. Their F Series players do support .flac, but they are far more expensive.
