It is said that he haunts those who travel by river at night. Some people say he plays “Dead Men Tell No Tales.” Shortly afterwards a man yells, “You've trespassed in pirate waters, mates. Now ye must suffer my rage!” Finally, total darkness as a pirate ship with a bleeding skull sails toward you, all the while a boy sings "One you're going to be gone, two Jhonny's coming for you, three he's gotten me, four you'd best let him gain more..."

Many allusions to this can be found in the movie V for Vendetta, one of the most notable being the phrase “Remember, remember, the fifth of November.” In fact, there are a myriad of illusions to the number 5 and the letter “V” in “V for Vendetta.” Some more include:

- "V for Vendetta" has 5 syllables.
- V's personal motto consists of the Latin phrase “Vi Veri Veniversum Vivus Vici” (By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe), which in turn consists of five words that begin with the letter V.
- Evey's name is composed of "E" (the fifth letter of the alphabet), "V" (5 in Roman numerals, and the fifth letter from the end of the alphabet), and "Y" (25th letter of the alphabet, or 5 squared).
- 5" converted to binary numerals is "101", so "Room 5" is "Room 101". This is an allusion to the infamous torture chamber in George Orwell's 1984.
