[Review] God of War

By Daniel

The God of War games are a fresh new look at action games. With a decent storyline and a character like Kratos, who can go wrong? Fountains of blood, bone crushing attacks and adventure around every corner - isn't that what we all love in a game?

Kratos is a somewhat misunderstood character. He was once leader of the Spartan army, who's reign of terror will be forever remembered in the land of Greece. Kratos is neither a hero nor a villain. He goes on a conquest for himself in order to rid himself of the haunting memories of his past.

One could say Kratos is an underling of the gods. He has outstanding power for a human. In fact, some argue that he may be inhuman. Kratos must find Pandora's Box which is hidden in the Pandora's Temple. This box could only be found by one truly qualified to hold its immense power.

After research, I found that players of the series really liked the user-friendly nature of the game. You would not be penalized for a death, but merely start over at a previous checkpoint in the game. Although the first God of War game only has three bosses, the main focus of the game is not to do well, but to actually beat the game. With the amount of enemies and traps, getting through certain levels is an achievement on its own.

The battle system in God of War is amazing. With many different combos and magic attacks that can be used, players can have some great fun customizing battles with their favorite attacks. After killing enemies, players are showered with little red orbs which can be used as currency. With them you can buy weapon upgrades for Kratos, making his journey, and yours, much easier.

God of War 2 is a worthy sequel to the original with many more bosses to fight, a wider variety of melee weapons, and a statistics menu that allows players to track their progress in the game. The player is also ranked for their performance in the "Challenge of the Titans," a change from God of War 1's "Challenge of the Gods".

God of War 3 has been confirmed to be released for the Playstation 3 in 2009. Little is known about the game so far, but it was confirmed to be in development by Cory Barlog at a God of War 2 launch event. Rumors has it that the developers are also trying to work out a Cooperative Mode for the upcoming game.
